The SIUE Office of Educational Outreach invites you to attend the spring 2019 Lifelong Learning Speakers Series every Wednesday on the SIUE campus.

Phi Kappa Phi's Book Exchange Ends Today

The SIUE Chapter 203 of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society is sponsoring its last book exchange of the academic year.

Members of the SIUE community are invited to bring a book, and then take one from the inventory available. Book purchases can also be made for a nominal cost.

Phi Kappa Phi is open to all academic disciplines. Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897, and is one of the nation’s oldest and most selective honor societies for all academic disciplines. Chapter 203 was established at SIUE in 1978.

Counseling Services presents a three-session workshop series on anxiety.

SIUE Hosts Novelist Vu Tran and Poet TJ Jarrett at Literary Event

SIUE’s new Master in Fine Arts (MFA) in creative writing program will host award-winning novelist Vu Tran and poet TJ Jarrett Friday and Saturday, April 5-6. Both authors will read in The Cougar Store at the Morris University Center (MUC) followed by lively question-and-answer sessions.

At 4 p.m. Friday, Vu Tran will read. He authored the novel, Dragonfish, a New York Times Notable Book and one of the San Francisco Chronicle’s Best Books of the Year. He is the winner of a Whiting Award, and his short stories have appeared in many publications. He teaches creative writing at the University of Chicago.

At 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the MUC’s Mississippi/Illinois Room, SIUE creative writing faculty members will participate in a flash reading. Professors Tiana Clark, Joshua Kryah, Geoff Schmidt and Valerie Vogrin will each read briefly from their work.

At 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jarrett will read. Her debut collection Ain’t No Grave was published by New Issues Press. Her second collection Zion, winner of the Crab Orchard Open Competition 2013, was published by Southern Illinois University Press. Her recent work has been published in Poetry, African American Review, Boston Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Callaloo, VQR and others. She lives in Nashville, Tenn.

Orchid Ensemble, highly acclaimed and unique musicians who blend a variety of musical styles to produce an intriguing and delightful sound experience for audiences worldwide, will perform:

Orchid Ensemble was nominated to receive the annual Canadian musical award JUNO.

The trio consists of Lan Tung (Taiwan/Canada) on the erhu/Chinese violin, Dailin Hsieh (Taiwan) on the zheng/Chinese zither, and Jonathan Bernard (Canada) on percussion. The group blends ancient musical instruments and traditions from China and beyond, creating a beautiful new sound.

A delicious lunch will be provided as well as entertainment, including tropical-themed games, a photo backdrop (to fool your friends as to your whereabouts), special musical offerings and plenty of fun, as we celebrate the end of another successful academic year.

You’re invited to wear floral shirts, flip flops, hats and other tropical apparel. SIUE gear and jeans are OK, too! We’ve also put in an order for tropical weather!

As always, many departments have generously donated great prizes for a random drawing, which will be on display by the entrance and announced following the event. You do not need to be present to win.

Additionally, during the week of April 8-13, the Cougar Store will be offering 25 percent off Cougar clothing that is not already on sale. As an added bonus, a limited edition, tropical design shirt will be available for purchase. Just present your Cougar ID to take advantage of the deal!

This year’s festivities will again include a photo montage of our departments. Your help in providing photos for the montage is appreciated. Please submit photos to kschmal@siue.edu by Friday, March 29. These can be photos from departmental events during the past year, or feel free to come up with something new and creative.

Call for Presentations for SIUE Diversity Day 2019

The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, in collaboration with the Diversity Day Committee, invites proposals for engagement sessions and Ed talks for the 2019 SIUE Diversity Day, which will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The theme for Diversity Day is “From Awareness to Action, SIUE Shaping a Changing World.”

Engagement sessions are 60 minutes long and should be focused on a topic related to diversity, equity and/or inclusion. Proposals will be accepted until Wednesday, May 1.
