Please join us in welcoming these guests to campus. Let’s prove why SIUE should be their home to achieve their educational goals!

Help Campus Kitchen at SIUE Raise the Dough!

The Campus Kitchen at SIUE is competing with more than 20 Campus Kitchens across the country to see which campus can “raise the most dough” in the Campus Kitchens Project “Raise the Dough” fundraiser.

The fundraiser runs through Friday, Feb. 22.

The Campus Kitchen at SIUE relies solely on monetary and in-kind donations to continue fighting hunger and food insecurity in the St. Louis Metro area. We need YOU to help us!

Cultural Competence for a Pharmacist, Feb. 21

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy Practice will present:

Wanqing Liu, PhD, associate professor, Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Wayne State University in Detroit
"Cultural Competence for a Pharmacist: What does Genetics Tell Us?"
1:30-2:30 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 21
200 University Park, room 1127

The seminar is sponsored by the Emereti Foundation.

In healthcare practice, cultural diversity has an impact on the interaction between caregivers and patients, which eventually influence healthcare outcomes. Therefore, cultural competence is not only a knowledge base but also an important skill to be developed for healthcare professionals, which is pivotal for providing individualized care to patients with diverse values, beliefs and behaviors.

While this training should be integrated into many courses of the PharmD curriculum, the pharmacogenomics education has a unique role in this process. We integrated cultural competence education in our pharmacogenomics course with three steps: awareness, understanding and integration.

We make students aware that patients heterogeneity in response to drug treatment is common, which could be attributed to many factors including culture diversity and genetic factors. We further emphasize the importance of understanding the biological and genetic basis of many culture diversity underlying the inter-patient variability in response to medication.

Such an understanding should be further integrated into the students’ professional practice to develop the skills for the evidence-based, patient-centric healthcare.
