IRIS Center's Proposals for April Conference Due Today

The SIUE IRIS Center, in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, and Lewis and Clark Community College, is hosting the interdisciplinary conference “Digital Humanities and the Undergraduate Experience" Friday-Saturday, April 26-27.

We are currently seeking proposals from university and college students, staff, and faculty to present on their approach to integrating digital humanities (DH) into undergraduate curriculum, informal learning environments and student life.

Potential topics might address:

  • Innovative approaches to using established digital humanities projects in the classroom
  • Undergraduates sharing their digital research
  • Engaging students in DH practices
  • DH integration within particular institutional settings
  • DH pedagogy and intersectionality
  • Approaches to DH curriculum that crosses disciplinary boundaries
  • Service learning, community engagement and the digital humanities
  • Undergraduate DH program design (ie., minors/majors/certificates)
  • DH in informal educational environments

By bringing together students, faculty and practicing professionals, this conference will allow discussions about the intersection of original, collaborative research with pedagogy and curriculum design.

Proposals can be made for:

  • Poster presentations 
  • Flash talks (3 minutes)
  • Individual papers (15 minutes)
  • Fully constituted panels (90 minutes)
  • Workshops (90 minutes)
Abstracts no longer than 300 words in length can be submitted here. Submissions are due by 5 p.m. today. Decisions regarding acceptance will be announced by March 1.

Please Consider Helping Our Senior Dental Students

All graduating senior dental students must take a patient-based clinical licensing examination prior to being eligible to apply for a license to practice dentistry. 

We need your help in advance of this licensing exam to complete this requirement. You can help by participating in in a FREE dental screening.

FREE screenings will be offered from 5-7 p.m. at the School of Dental Medicine on the Alton campus:

A FREE dental screening, including select x-rays, will be offered to patients willing to participate and who are 18 years and older.

There will be NO CHARGE for the treatment you will receive during the Board Exam.

No appointment is necessary for the FREE screenings offered. Please bring a photo ID. Free parking is available in the patient parking area (off of Annex Street).

Axtell Memorial Lecture in Celebration of Darwin Day, Feb. 11

"Natural History and Voyages of Discovery: Axtell Memorial Lecture in Celebration of Darwin Day"

Refreshments will follow the lecture. 

This annual lecture is given in February in celebration of Charles Darwin's birthday. Patterson has worked extensively on tropical mammals and is the author of "The Lions of Tsavo: exploring the legacy of Africa's notorious man-eaters."

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Self-Care as Preventive Healthcare
6:30-7:30 p.m.
Tuesdays, through Feb. 26
Cost: $49 

From basic daily care to preventative measures and treatment, much of our healthcare actually takes place at home. Knowing the right information can help in making wise health choices in prevention and decisions for home treatment as well as knowing when to seek professional medical advice and attention. We will discuss preventive measures, simple home treatment suggestions and how to prepare for a visit and conversation with your healthcare provider for best outcomes. Being well informed can help you not only live a healthier life, but also help your healthcare dollar go farther. 

Yoga: History and Practice
5-6 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays, through March 7
Cost: $10 per session or $85 for all 10 sessions 

This beginning yoga class provides the fundamentals and history principles of yoga. Individuals will learn posture alignment, breath work through guided demonstration and reap the benefits of yoga including improve balance, physical strength, flexibility, relaxation, increased energy, and better digestion. 

Modern Greek for Beginners
5-7 p.m.
Thursdays, through May 2
Cost: $129 

Modern Greek for Beginners is for anyone aged high school to adults who would like to learn the Greek language. You will be taught Greek reading, grammar and culture about everyday life in Greece. Dialogue sections in Greek and English will be provided. The dialogues will be from live videos filmed in Greece. Textbook and all supporting materials are included in cost of course. 

Traditional Korean Tea Ceremony

Cost: $99 

This course introduces the basic knowledge and methods used in the Korean tea culture. Participants will learn and experience the propriety of preparing, making and offering tea in a traditional everyday Korean tea ceremony.
