SIUE Black Heritage Month Committee Spotlights Alumna Thelma Mothershed Wair

Throughout the month of February, the SIUE Black Heritage Month Committee is presenting information about selected people who have impacted black history and who are important to SIUE's history.

The below information was submitted by Daniel Shields, admissions counselor.

Thelma Mothershed Wair, who graduated with a master's in guidance and counseling from SIUE in 1972, was a member of The Little Rock Nine.

The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine African American students who helped to end segregation in the U.S. by enrolling in the then segregated Little Rock Central High School in 1957.

After receiving her master's degree from SIUE, Mothershed Wair, the eldest of the Little Rock Nine, went on to teach and serve as a school counselor in the St. Louis and Metro East area for approximately 30 years before retiring.

In addition to receiving multiple honors and awards, in May of 2016, Mothershed Wair received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from SIUE.

Mental Health Check-In for Students, Feb. 12

Faculty/Staff Open House at the Student Fitness Center, Feb. 12-13

Did you know that although the general public cannot get a membership to the Student Fitness Center (SFC) on campus, SIUE faculty, staff, and their families have the option of joining?

To showcase all that the SFC has to offer, the Department of Campus Recreation invites faculty and staff to take advantage of two days of free access:

6 a.m.-11 p.m.
Tuesday-Wednesday, Feb. 12-13
Student Fitness Center

We have a large variety of cardiovascular and strength equipment, a free weight room, an one-eighth mile track, free group fitness classes (yoga is normally $15/semester for members), courts for sports play and an indoor pool.

You can ask for a free tour, a free equipment orientation, or just work out or play!

Please stop by the Reception Desk with your SIUE ID and government issued ID (driver’s license) on Feb. 12 and/or 13 to sign a waiver. Then you can visit the SFC as much as you like over these two days!

A faculty or staff SFC membership is only $240 per year, and we have discounted membership rates for your spouse/partner and/or dependents as well. Various payment options are available.

Visit us at http://www.siue.edu/crec/ for an extensive list of amenities and programs available, or ask for a brochure at the Reception Desk.
