Cookie Decorating with Blackbird Bakery (Cost: $55)
6-8 p.m.
Tuesdays, Today and Jan. 22

In this two-part course with instructor Emily Paul of Blackbird Bakery, you will learn how to make royal icing, mix colors, fill cookies using basic colors and wet-on-wet designs, and add additional decorations, including flowers and lace. At the end of the course, you will take home one dozen decorated cookies.

Montgomery inducted to STL Sports Hall of Fame

The St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame has announced legendary former SIUE Softball Head Coach Sandy Montgomery will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in February at the Illinois Enshrinement Dinner on Monday, Feb. 11 at the Gateway Classic Cars venue in O’Fallon, Ill.

Montgomery concluded her SIUE tenure of 30 years of coaching and administrative duties in October 2018. In that time, her accomplishments include more than 1,000 career wins, winning the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championship, 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, six conference titles and 10 40+ win seasons. She ended her illustrious SIUE softball coaching career with a 1,051-540-2 (.660) record, making her one of the most successful NCAA softball coaches of all time. At SIUE, she coached 11 All-Americans and 79 All-Conference players.

She came to SIUE in 1981 as a softball student-athlete. Montgomery was inducted into the SIUE Athletics Hall of Fame as a player after setting many school pitching records.

Other inductees into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame Metro East Class of 2019 alongside Montgomery include Brian Cox (NFL), LaPhonso Ellis (NBA), Dawn Harper (Olympics), Jeff Luechtefeld (basketball), Fred Rakers (volleyball), Mike Reis (broadcaster), Bob Smith (international baseball) and Eric Wright (NFL).

As spring classes begin, don’t forget that the Career Development Center offers presentations on career-related topics.

A career counselor is able to visit your class to give presentations on the following topics, including but not limited to, resumes, interviewing, networking, job search, co-ops and internships, LinkedIn, career assessments, preparing for a career fair, social media, professional attire, and etiquette.

Presentations are offered from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, or by request. We will do our best to accommodate all requests. However, there will be times when we have limited staff availability.

Note: If you would like your class to use our services (i.e. mock interviews, assessments, resume approvals, etc.), please notify us in advance that your students will be making appointments, as well as for what class and which class assignment. This way, we will be able to ensure we are meeting your and your students’ needs.

Encourage Students to Apply for LeaderShape Institute, Deadline Jan. 18

The Kimmel Student Involvement Center has extended the deadline for applications to the 2019 LeaderShape Institute at SIUE to Friday, Jan. 18.

Please recommend your emerging and established student leaders to apply, or send a list of nominees to Melinda Daniels at melidan@siue.edu. Daniels will send personalized emails with more information to students on your behalf or anonymously.

LeaderShape is a free six-day, five-night intensive leadership retreat from Monday-Saturday, May 13-18.

Students who participate will leave with a stronger sense of self, improved confidence, and an enhanced ability to lead and work with others.

Nominate a Student Employee of the Year!

Do you have an outstanding student employee? If so, we invite you to nominate them for SIUE Student Employee of the Year.

Download a nomination form here. To be eligible, a student must be employed for a minimum of six months between June 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019 (anticipated).

The deadline for nominations is Friday, Feb.15 by 4:30 p.m. After committee review, one student will be selected to be Student Employee of the Year for SIUE. The winner will be announced during National Student Employee Appreciation Week, April 14-20, and will have their name and nomination letter sent to the state competition. The winner will also receive a $500 scholarship!

IRIS Center Invites Proposals for April Conference

The SIUE IRIS Center, in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences and Lewis and Clark Community College, is hosting the interdisciplinary conference “Digital Humanities and the Undergraduate Experience" Friday-Saturday, April 26-27.

We are currently seeking proposals from university and college students, staff and faculty to present on their approach to integrating digital humanities (DH) into undergraduate curriculum, informal learning environments and student life.

Potential topics might address:

  • Innovative approaches to using established digital humanities projects in the classroom
  • Undergraduates sharing their digital research
  • Engaging students in DH practices
  • DH integration within particular institutional settings
  • DH pedagogy and intersectionality
  • Approaches to DH curriculum that crosses disciplinary boundaries
  • Service learning, community engagement and the digital humanities
  • Undergraduate DH program design (ie. minors/majors/certificates)
  • DH in informal educational environments

By bringing together students, faculty and practicing professionals, this conference will allow discussions about the intersection of original, collaborative research with pedagogy and curriculum design.

Proposals can be made for:

  • Poster presentations 
  • Flash talks (3 minutes)
  • Individual papers (15 minutes)
  • Fully constituted panels (90 minutes)
  • Workshops (90 minutes)

Abstracts no longer than 300 words in length can be submitted here. Submissions are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8. Decisions regarding acceptance will be announced by March 1.
