"Sensitive Guys" Staged Reading, Today

In M.J. Kaufman's play, women and gender non-conforming people play men trying to understand the intricacies of masculinity and violence.

"Will" is a freshman at Watson college. "Jordan" is a senior film major. "Tyler" is writing a novel for his thesis. They are all members of the Men’s Peer Education group and ask questions like, "What is male privilege? What can we do about it?"

Then some accusatory posters appear around campus suggesting that a member of the group committed sexual assault. Could it be that even sensitive guys, guys working on their privilege, sometimes turn violent or aggressive?

After the staged reading, a moderated conversation on masculinity, allyship, and sexual violence will be held in the Morris University Center Oak/Redbud Rooms. At the same time, a counselor from Call for Help will lead a survivor session in the Hickory/Hackberry Rooms for any survivors who would like to process their emotions from the staged reading and share their stories.

The staged reading is directed by Tiffany Smith and features Rachel Bailey, Karen Pierce, Fox Smith, Sierra Smith, Laurell Stevenson and Melody Valen. "Sensitive Guys" is the start of Solid Lines Productions' fifth season.

Donations are optional and admission is FREE. Solid Lines is partnering with Safe Connections and St. Martha's Hall to collect donations for St. Martha's Hall, a shelter for abused women and their children.

The following donations will be collected at the door of each performance:

• Toilet paper
• Children's band-aids (cartoon ones)
• Stickers
• Halloween candy
• Target gift cards

"Howl" Rescheduled, Oct. 24

Jeffrey Skoblow, PhD, emeritus professor of English and Eric Ruckh, PhD, associate professor of history, will read Allen Ginsberg’s "Howl." We will be joined by itinerant artists and musicians:

12:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 24
One of the small knolls in the Main Quad

Ginsberg wrote "Howl" in Berkeley, California in 1954-55 and read it for the first time at the Six Gallery in San Francisco on Oct. 7, 1955.

Ginsberg’s reading of "Howl" is a signal moment in the history of American culture and letters. With this poem, Ginsberg aligns spirit and body, breadth and idea to assault the madness of American culture and society (then and now) and redeem the holiness of the body and its manifold, myriad pleasures.

We hope many of you will join us.

Sustained Dialogue Sessions in Residence Halls

Sustained Dialogue is a way for our community to explore race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, ability status, and other topics that aren’t always easy to talk about in diverse groups.

This 10-week program will transform you for the better through conversations to share not just your opinions, but also hear stories and life experiences behind others’ perspectives. We have created a learning space for open dialogue that makes it possible for students from different sides of an issue to learn the root causes of community problems and build relationships to address these issues with new allies.

The incentives for participating include:

• A Free Sustained Dialogue T-shirt
• $$$ in Cougar bucks for completion of the program
• Free food throughout the 10-week program
• A chance to make an impact on the SIUE community and shape a changing world!

Space for the program is limited and only 120 students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. If this sounds like the perfect opportunity for you, please join us for an information session to learn more about the program.

For more information, contact Tarsha Moore at tarmoor@siue.edu or Tionna Hunter at tiohunt@siue.edu.
