"What Were You Wearing?" Exhibit Ends Today

Don't miss "What Were You Wearing?" hosted by Prevention Education and Advocacy Center (PEACe) with YWCA Alton and Call for Help.

Originating at the University of Kansas, this exhibit uses descriptions written by survivors of the clothes they wore when they were assaulted and pairs them with similar outfits for a visual display. The aim of this exhibit is to break down rape myths and encourage the audience to consider what can they say other than "what were you wearing?" How does this question impact others on our campus and shape SIUE culture?

There will be counselors and advocates available throughout the event should anyone have questions, concerns or feedback.

Faculty Reading at The Cougar Store, Today

The creative writing program presents Adam Cleary and Lauren Gerber as they read from their work:

4 p.m.
Today
The Cougar Store
Morris University Center

Adam Cleary, an instructor in the Department of English Language and Literature, initially rose to prominence as a successful vaudeville act on the Orpheum Circuit, performing in a routine featuring a horn playing dolphin. Sadly, as is often the case in show business, egos clashed over top billing and a rift developed between Adam and his costar, with the dolphin ultimately pursuing more lucrative bookings as a solo performer. Cleary retired, went to graduate school and later began teaching English at SIUE.

Lauren Gerber is an instructor in the Dept. of English Language and Literature and an alumna, having earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SIUE. She recently returned to SIUE after six years of traveling. During this time away, she volunteered through AmeriCorps, taught at a community college in North Carolina, climbed 10 14,000-feet mountains, and earned an MFA in creative writing.

The reading is free and open to the public, so please join us!

Dr. Kristine Hildebrandt's Sabbatical Presentation, Oct. 12

Kristine Hildebrandt, PhD, associate professor in the Department of English Language and Literature, will give her sabbatical presentation: "When Your Cousin is Your Sister and Your Niece is Your Daughter: Semantic Overlaps and Changes in Gurung (Tibeto-Burman) Kinship Terminology."

10-10:50 a.m.
Friday, Oct. 12
Peck Hall, room 2413

Kinship terminology, the nomenclature used to identify immediate and extended family members, is an important linguistic and social organizing tool in Tibeto-Burman languages of south and southeast Asia.

Hildebrandt will briefly survey the system of kinship terminology in Gurung (as investigated during my fall 2017 sabbatical), pausing to consider the ways that these terms index different types of family (and extra-family) relationships. She will also comment on how contemporary Gurung kinship terms have undergone various types of language change through time.
