Lifelong Learning Speaker Series, Today

SIUE Office of Educational Outreach invites you to attend the fall 2018 Lifelong Learning Speakers Series every Wednesday on the campus of SIUE.

Ayurveda: The Science of Personalized, Natural Healthcare
5:30-7 p.m.
Wednesdays, Today–Oct. 24
Cost: $49

The term “Ayurveda” translates as “the Science of Life.” Traditionally, it partners with Yoga to provide a basis of personalized and natural healthcare. This class will explore the basics of Ayurveda theory including personal constitution, seasonal changes, lifestyle and daily regimen suggestions.

Conversational Japanese
7-8:30 p.m.
Thursdays from Sept. 20–Nov. 1
Cost: $89

This course is designed to help those students with little or no previous experience with the Japanese language. Participants will learn basic introductions, greetings and vocabulary helpful in describing common items and experiences. Pronunciation will be practiced, and basic Japanese conversation will be introduced along with learning Japanese culture. No textbook is needed for the course. The instructor will provide handouts as needed.

Celebrate Craig McIntosh's Retirement, Sept. 21

Don't Miss the SIUE Science Building East Rededication, Sept. 21

The SIUE College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) will host a Science Showcase on Friday, Sept. 21 from 6-8 p.m. as it celebrates the $70-million renovation of the Science Building East. The renovation focused on teaching and research facilities in the Departments of Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, and the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Resource Center.

A ribbon-cutting will occur at 6 p.m., followed by a reception with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. SIUE Chancellor Randy Pembrook and CAS Dean Greg Budzban will speak at approximately 6:40 p.m. in lecture hall 1136.

Tours of the science complex will be available, so visitors will experience interactive exhibits in state of the art labs and classrooms. The STEM Resource Center, with materials available to local/regional teachers, will also be open.

Flu Shots are Now Available

Health Service has received its shipment of flu vaccine (Fluarix® Quadrivalent), and is pleased to offer flu vaccine to faculty, staff, retirees and students.

Health Service is able to provide flu shots to employees and retirees who are the primary insurer in a state sponsored insurance plan at no charge.

In order to receive the vaccine at no charge, employees must:
1.) Document the last four digits of your social security number
2.) Present your university ID and
3.) Present your state health insurance card

Retirees must

Health Service is able to provide flu immunization at a cost of $30 (cash or check only) to SIUE employees not covered under a state health plan.

Pease plan to wear clothing for easy access to the upper arm injection site.

WALK IN Flu Shot Clinics will be available in the Lower Level of the Student Success Center. In order for us to continue to provide dedicated nursing service to our students during this time, we will use the meeting rooms close to our clinical office. There will be signs to identify the appropriate place.

The Honorary Degrees and Distinguished Service Award Committee invites nominations from the University community for consideration by the committee. All departments and schools are asked to consider and submit well-deserving nominations.

Fall 2018 Safe Zone Ally Training, Oct. 10

Safe Zone will be offering Ally training for faculty and staff:

What is Safe Zone?
Safe Zone is a community of people who:

  • Will be understanding, supportive and trustworthy if LGBTQIA people need help, advice, or just someone to talk to
  • Will not tolerate homophobic, heterosexist, cisgenderism comments and actions but will address them in an educational and informative manner
  • Have attended Safe Zone training and have information on campus and community resources

Nominate a Champion for Diversity

The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion invites the SIUE community to nominate a faculty or staff member for the 2018-2019 SIUE Champion for Diversity Award.

This award is presented to a faculty or staff member who has demonstrated an exemplary level of dedication to SIUE’s mission of fostering equal opportunity, positive interactions with students, staff and faculty, and who respects and values differing backgrounds and points of view within SIUE.  

Nominations are now open and should be received by Wednesday, Oct. 17. The Champion for Diversity Award will be recognized annually during December commencement and will consist of a plaque and $500 donated to a University diversity and inclusion project of the recipient’s choice.
