SIUE Alum Assists in Campus-wide Projector Update

NEC featured SIUE in a case study as the University updated its educational technology with NEC projectors and displays that eliminate downtime and enhance learning. Mark Dorris, a University ITS manager who holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from SIUE, handled the task internally.

SIUE alum Matt Ursch, group manager of the Technical Services Department at Schiller’s in St. Louis, has worked with the University on audio-visual infrastructure for nearly 30 years.  His challenge was to replace and standardize classroom projectors with cost-efficient, low-maintenance laser models. He achieved the goal with NEC products.

The projectors are deployed across the University in all sizes of learning spaces, including computer classrooms, labs, smart classrooms, active learning classrooms and large auditorium classrooms.

Blackboard Ally Working Sessions for Faculty

Faculty, have you seen this icon in your Blackboard courses?

It is one of the new Blackboard Ally indicators for accessibility. Making course content accessible to all learners not only makes for better course design, but it helps to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Want to turn those red icons to green? ITS has scheduled two-hour working sessions from now until the end of November. Members of the ITS Instructional Design & Learning Technologies team will be on hand if assistance is needed.

Participants are expected to come to these working sessions with prior knowledge of how Blackboard Ally works so time can be spent on improving course content. If you are not familiar with how Blackboard Ally works, please watch this overview and review related materials. Visit this form to register for the sessions.

Register for Career Development Center Workforce Recruitment Program

Are you a current student or recent graduate with a disability seeking employment?

Each year, SIUE participates in the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) to give students with disabilities the opportunity to apply for internships or permanent positions at federal agencies across the United States.

The WRP is an excellent way to:

  • Find an internship or permanent position at federal agencies
  • Explore careers in the federal service
  • Promote skills and abilities
  • Gain resume development and interviewing experience

To be eligible for the WRP, students must be:

  • Current, full-time undergraduate students with a disability
  • Current, full-time graduate students with a disability
  • Alumni, who have graduated within one year
  • U.S. Citizen

The registration process ends Tuesday, Oct. 16. However, it is important to begin preparing for registration as soon as possible.

To learn more about the WRP and the registration process, please contact the Career Development Center at 650-3708 to schedule a WRP appointment with Jamie Doss, MA, LPC, Career Counselor/WRP Campus Coordinator.

Rave Guardian Personal Safety App

SIUE is consistently rated among the safest campuses in the nation. As the safety of its students, staff, faculty and guests is its top priority, SIUE and Parking Services wish to remind everyone of SIUE-Safe – the free Rave Guardian personal safety app, as an additional component for individual security.

SIUE-Safe is the perfect complement to the campus E-lert system. The E-lert system provides emergency notification to faculty, staff and students. On the other hand, SIUE-Safe allows emergency communication from faculty, staff and students to their guardians and University Police.

The app’s capabilities include:

  • Setting a safety timer – Notify people you trust to check in on you if you are alone or in an unfamiliar place
  • Managing and messaging your guardians – Invite family, friends or others to be your guardian and communicate with them within the app as needed
  • Easy Emergency Communication – Call safety officials directly for help if trouble arises and send text-tips, including photos, if you see something suspicious

Rave Guardian is one of the best ways to improve personal safety and put people in immediate contact with University Police, if necessary. There is no charge to download the app or to use it. Even though SIUE is already a safe campus, the Rave Guardian technology will help to make SIUE even safer.

For more information, call 618-650-3324 or to download SIUE-Safe, visit raveguardian.com.
