The Department of Chemistry presents a sabbatical lecture by Distinguished Research Professor Michael Shaw, PhD.
“Adventures in Inorganic Electrochemistry”

1 p.m.
Today
BLI Lounge, located at 420 University Park Dr. (past NCERC)

Abstract: The Shaw group at SIUE specializes in mechanistic electrochemical investigations of the consequences of electron-transfer to inorganic molecules. Translation: we figure out what happens to the groups of atoms that make up a molecule when you force another electron onto it or away from it. During my sabbatical period, I worked on the development of hardware and software tools which aid in these investigations. I worked with collaborators at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Missouri-St. Louis on the consequences of electron transfer for specific molecules of biochemical or industrial interest. Finally, I have started to connect these activities to new visualization tools such as the Google Cardboard platform, so as to bring visually complex information into the classroom.
