Today is the Deadline to Cast Votes for University Staff Senate Open Seats

The University Staff Senate has received multiple petitions for candidacy for open seats in the Negotiated and Prevailing, Open Range, and Non-Represented Professional Staff classifications.

Because there are contested elections, members of those constituencies received an e-mail on Friday, April 6 with the qualifications submitted by the candidates, as well as a link to the electronic ballot.

If you are a member of one of those constituencies, please check your Clutter and Spam folders if you do not see the message in your Inbox.

Votes must be cast by 4:30 p.m. today. Please share this information with employees who do not have regular access to email.

Don't Miss International Studies Day, April 12

Mark your calendar for the second edition of International Studies Day presented by SIUE's international studies program, with support from the Public Relations Student Society of America and public relations campaigns students.

9 a.m.-5 p.m.

International Studies Day is free and open to the public. It will have an exciting program, including a regional panel about international issues, two UN representatives talking about UN and international careers and advocacy, as well as keynote speaker Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury, former President of the UN Security Council.

9 a.m.–3 p.m. - Information Booths
Participants include various SIUE departments and programs, the Office of International Affairs, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and student organizations, as well as regional organizations, including the International Institute of St. Louis, European Studies Center at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Institute for International Education and the Peace Corps.

9:30-11 a.m. - Panel on international issues impacting our region
Speakers include representatives of the Council on Foreign Relations, St. Louis Committee; World Affairs Council of St. Louis; International Institute of St. Louis; and World Trade Center, St. Louis

11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. - Careers at the United Nations and International Advocacy for Sustainable Development
Speakers include Ms. Nanayaa Kumi, associate talent outreach officer, Office of Human Resources Management, United Nations Secretariat, New York City and Ms. Zephanii Smith, member of the National Council of the United Nations Association of the United States.

1-3 p.m. - Keynote speaker, Q&A, press conference
Ambassador Anwarul Karim Chowdhury, founder of Global Movement for the Culture of Peace, will discuss "The United Nations - Essential or Irrelevant in Today's World?"
Chowdhury is a career diplomat, who has served as permanent representative to the United Nations, president of the UN Security Council, president of UNICEF Board, UN Under-Secretary-General and senior special advisor to UN General Assembly President.

3-5 p.m. - Film screening
"I am From Chile" (director: Gonzalo Diaz Ugarte)
This coming of age immigration story, drawing from the director’s personal experiences, has received several awards at international film festivals.

Food and refreshments will be served throughout the day of the event. Participants in all activities will be entered a prize drawing.

This workshop will discuss leading and managing virtual teams effectively. You will learn about various tools, techniques, resources and how to utilize them, and how to involve everyone in the process. We will discuss on-site versus off-site participation and involvement. 

Examples will be provided from a management perspective and an employee perspective. You also will learn about the ground rules and assumptions in virtual teams and what works best – co-locating, global sourcing, etc., as well as historical references to what has worked best and what has not (best practices).

In this workshop, we will explore the basic requirements needed to ensure a smooth implementation of a web application. The workshop will highlight some of the necessary requirements that at a minimum should be considered while developing a project plan. Considerations of web hosting facilities, appropriate infrastructure considerations, disaster recovery considerations, on-going maintenance minimum requirements, cloud usage, etc. We will not get into programming, but we will discuss at a high-level the pressures needed to ensure a solid project plan.

Spring Open Figure Drawing Practice Sessions Offered

Figure Drawing is a time-honored practice of studying the human form as an artistic subject. It engages a professional collaboration between model and art students, in which dynamic poses are held still for various lengths of time in order to capture movement and expression.

Those who practice figure drawing regularly learn the underlying thought and processes that aid in conveying the human form convincingly.

Attend a Free Hearing Screening, April 13 and 20

The SIUE speech-language pathology program is offering free hearing screenings for adults and children age three and older at the Edwardsville Public Library.

The screenings will be conducted in the Edwardsville Public Library’s Large Meeting Room, located in its lower level.

Faculty Needed for Blackboard Ally Pilot, Summer 2018

In previous weeks, the Offices of Educational Outreach, Disability Support Services, and Information Technology Services announced the course accessibility tool, Blackboard Ally, would be piloted in summer 2018.

We are seeking faculty teaching in Summer 2018 who are using Blackboard extensively for content delivery to participate in the pilot. For pilot faculty, the Blackboard Ally tool will be enabled during the course building phase in mid-April. Before summer term, faculty will be provided resources to learn about the tool and attend optional training. We will then ask participating faculty and students to provide feedback on the Blackboard Ally tool and the resources provided. 

At the end of the pilot, supporting materials will be reevaluated and Blackboard Ally will be enabled for all Fall 2018 courses. Additional training sessions will be scheduled for late June, July and August. After the beginning of the fall semester, resources will be available through the ITS Knowledge Base, or individual consultations can be scheduled with the Instructional Design & Learning Technologies group. 

Faculty interested in joining the pilot should complete this application form by Tuesday, April 17. Faculty from all disciplines are welcome to take part in the pilot. Courses running in the first five weeks of the term that use Blackboard extensively for content delivery will be given preference. The SIUE East St. Louis After School Performing Arts Program will present its recital:
