Graduate School Presents Student Research Symposium, April 4

The Graduate School will host the 2018 Graduate Student Research Symposium.

2:30-5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 4
Morris University Center

This event celebrates and showcases the variety of research and creative activities taking place at SIUE! Attending the symposium gives our prospective graduate students the opportunity to talk to current graduate students about their SIUE projects and experiences, as well as meeting with faculty and admissions staff. It also allows us to celebrate the research efforts and accomplishments made by many SIUE faculty over the course of the year.

This year’s symposium will feature three specific points of interest:
• Graduate student presentations – This event allows students to display their research to fellow students and faculty, while receiving constructive evaluations from their peers to help improve their presentations. The presentations are from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the Goshen Lounge.

Hoppe Awardee presentation – The Hoppe presentation is given by a faculty member who has been a recipient of the Hoppe Research Professor Award. These awards are given in order to recognize faculty members whose research or creative activities have the promise of making significant contributions to their fields of study. This year’s presentation will be given by Jeremy Jewell, PhD, professor of psychology in the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior. Jewell will speak from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Illinois Room.

The Chancellor’s Reception – Hosted by Chancellor Randy Pembrook, this reception honors the faculty and staff who submitted external grants from March 1, 2017-Feb. 28, 2018 with special recognition for first-time PI's. The chancellor will also acknowledge the 2018 Vaughnie J. Lindsay New Investigator Award recipient, the 2018 Distinguished Research Professor, and the 2018-20 Hoppe Research Professor recipient. This event is from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Meridian Ballroom and is for all faculty and the student presenters. Faculty are welcome to invite their graduate students to attend.

“Sing & Play” 4-Week Class for 1- and 2-year-olds

Get ready to sing, play and move with your little one in this high-energy music class designed to be just right for children under two years of age. This new Kindermusik curriculum focuses on your child's beginning movement, helping to build the muscles your baby needs to walk, and vocal development, helping to nurture your child’s speaking and singing voice. With a mix of both parent-child joint activities and child-focused activities, you’ll be able to join right in on all the singing and dancing while also getting the chance to observe how your older baby or toddler learns on her own.

May theme: Zoom!
Cars go, trains go, and toddlers are always on the go! Whether they’re taking their first cautious steps or zooming off to explore something new, one thing is for certain – toddlers always seem to be moving. In this unit, they will get to move like trains in a tunnel, bounce in a bumpy car ride, and soar on the wings of airplanes in activities designed to help them to get wherever it is they choose to go!

“Laugh & Learn” 4-Week Class for 3- and 4-year-olds

May theme: In My Garden
In My Garden is dedicated to the great outdoors, growing plants, the green environment, and our many animal friends in the garden. The children do lots of different activities, from investigating a garden, to growing cabbages, to crawling around slowly like a snail and then jumping up quickly like a grasshopper. They take an imaginative walk around a garden to clean it up, while singing and picking up trash for the trashcan or recyclable items for the recycling bin.

Tuition for each class is $75 and is due by Tuesday, April 10.

Faculty Needed for Blackboard Ally Pilot, Summer 2018

In previous weeks, the Offices of Educational Outreach, Disability Support Services, and Information Technology Services announced the course accessibility tool, Blackboard Ally, would be piloted in summer 2018.

We are seeking faculty teaching in Summer 2018 who are using Blackboard extensively for content delivery to participate in the pilot. For pilot faculty, the Blackboard Ally tool will be enabled during the course building phase in mid-April. Before summer term, faculty will be provided resources to learn about the tool and attend optional training. We will then ask participating faculty and students to provide feedback on the Blackboard Ally tool and the resources provided.

At the end of the pilot, supporting materials will be reevaluated and Blackboard Ally will be enabled for all Fall 2018 courses. Additional training sessions will be scheduled for late June, July and August. After the beginning of the fall semester, resources will be available through the ITS Knowledge Base, or individual consultations can be scheduled with the Instructional Design & Learning Technologies group.

Faculty interested in joining the pilot should complete this application form by Tuesday, April 17. Faculty from all disciplines are welcome to take part in the pilot. Courses running in the first five weeks of the term that use Blackboard extensively for content delivery will be given preference. Please contact Instructional Design & Learning Technologies for questions at idlt_center@siue.edu
