Intramural and Club Sports Fields Open with New Synthetic Turf, March 20

Campus Recreation is set to reopen the Intramural and Club Sports fields with new synthetic turf!

Join Campus Recreation at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 for the grand re-opening of the RecPlex Synthetic Turf.

The new synthetic turf encompasses the lighted recreation fields and softball field. The new turf will provide increased durability and safer playing surfaces to meet the needs of the intramural and club sports programs, along with student organization rentals.

There will be added cost savings for maintenance, which directly benefits our students by extending their play throughout the year.

Diplomat-in-Residence Visits SIUE, March 22

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature announces the upcoming visit of Midwest Diplomat-in-Residence Melissa Martínez on Thursday, March 22.

Martínez holds a master’s in international and public affairs from the University of Columbia. She joined the U.S. Department of State in 2002 and was a Diplomat-in-Residence (DIR) at the Luskin School of Public Affairs Department of Public Policy at UCLA. Since August 2017, she has served as the DIR of the Midwest region.

These events are jointly organized by the Departments of Foreign Languages and Literature, and International Studies, as well as the Women’s Studies program.

SIUE will host the regional Science and Engineering Research Challenge, which will showcase projects from students grades 5-12.

Guest Lecturer Dr. Paul Rasmussen, March 26

Dr. Paul Rasmussen, the first recipient of the Dreikurs Visiting Scholar Fellowship from the Department of Psychology, will present "Why is Adlerian/Dreikursian Thinking Relevant Today?"

Q&A to follow

Rasmussen is an accomplished scholar and teacher and an expert in the study and practice of Adlerian Psychology.

Rasmussen will present key concepts of Adler-Dreikurs theory and practice, which focus on the holistic and socially-embedded nature of humans, and the belief that their emotions and motivations are goal-directed. He will consider these questions: If humans could reset and fix all the problems of life, what realities in terms of good ideas would persist? What resources would we consider the most optimal to face life realities? What constitutes a good idea in discussion of the human experience?

SIUE Mass Communications Week, March 26-30

The SIUE's Mass Communications Week will be Monday-Friday, March 26-30 in the Morris University Center. This year’s theme is “Swiping Right on Media Convergence.”

The four-day conference is free and open to the public. It will feature five top communications professionals from around the United States: 

  • Brittany Richter, vice president and head of social media for iProspect in New York City
  • Brooke Huntley, director of Cox Analytics for Cox Media Group in Atlanta
  • Schron Jackson, SIUE mass communications alumnus and public information manager for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department
  • Chris Kilcullen, vice president and digital director of H&L Partners, and president of the Advertising Club of Greater St. Louis
  • Daphne Valerius, filmmaker, producer and journalist from Columbia, Mo.

Director Kevin Hines will be present to address the audience, and discuss resilience and recovery within mental illness. Hines is a nationally known speaker on suicide awareness and prevention.

Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion Educational Culture Tour

The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion would like to invite you to join us on our second annual Educational Culture Tour!

On Monday, April 16, we will travel by bus to Brooklyn/Lovejoy, Ill.—one of the oldest black incorporated towns in America—to learn about the relationship between SIUE (specifically Lovejoy Library), abolitionist Elijah P. Lovejoy and the nearby community of Brooklyn/Lovejoy. Faculty tour guide Associate Professor Prince Wells III will share insight as someone who grew up in Brooklyn/Lovejoy. 

Students, faculty and staff are all welcome and encouraged to attend. We will begin boarding the bus in Hairpin Drive at 8 a.m. and return by 11:30 a.m.
