This year, under the artistic direction of Associate Professor Kathryn Bentley and student assistant Myy Moffett, BTW is welcoming back alumni for this annual theatrical event.

The late Lisa Colbert, assistant professor in the Department of Theater and Dance, started the BTW in 1999 as an avenue for students to create and perform theatrical work of the African-American theater canon.

Students from all academic disciplines have participated as writers, performers, designers and audience members in the BTW. They have engaged in writing original work, as well as performing work by noted Black playwrights. Students have also collaborated with professional artists from St. Louis, such as Hassie Davis (SIUE alum), Fannie Lebby and David A.N. Jackson.

BTW alums are professional playwrights, directors, performers and producers. This reunion is a celebration of the power and beauty that Black Theatre Workshop has been and continues to be for countless students.

Current SIUE BTW members and alumni will perform original pieces that celebrate the spirit of Sankofa—fetching from the past that which is good and bringing it to the present to evoke positive change.

On Friday evening, two students will be presented with the Rudy Wilson Griot award. Wilson was the assistant provost for cultural and social diversity at SIUE and was a supporter of BTW and performed several times with students. This award, recognizes students who embody Wilson's love of storytelling. This year’s awardees are Avalon Palmer and Kiara Ulmer.

On Sunday afternoon, The Colbert Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to students who exemplify Colbert’s commitment to upholding the diverse voices in theatrical expression. Colbert was a professor, actor, director, poet and activist whose vision continues to reach students. This year’s awardees are Luis Castro, Mitanesha Moeffett, David Zimmerman, and Michael Watkins.

What resources would we consider the most optimal to face life realities? What constitutes a good idea in discussion of the human experience?

You can also send her a congratulatory email at klasite@siue.edu

“What an honor! I would like to thank Dr. Jerry O'Brien for the nomination and all of the faculty, graduate assistants and students of the Department of Social Work for all that you do," said Lasiter. "Working at SIUE is a pleasure and an ongoing learning experience.”

“Kelly is a very positive person, and is highly supportive of faculty and students," said Jerry O'Brien, PhD, Department of Social Work chair. "As the first person that many students communicate with in the Department, Kelly is always personable and pleasant. These characteristics also typify her contacts with others throughout the University. In our social work program, where we teach our students the importance of responding to others with dignity and respect, it is important to have a person as the 'face' of the department who manifests these qualities. ”
