The University Staff Senate's meetings are open to constituency members. Non-senate members can come and listen. Participation depends on the agenda being discussed and/or prior approval from the president of the University Staff Senate. The next University Staff Senate Executive meeting will be held:

Staff Senate Executive meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month. Staff Senate meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month, with the exception of July during which there is no full Senate meeting.

Please join us for Dr. Jerry M. Whitmore Jr.'s presentation, "Exploring Ways to Broaden Participation in STEM."

Whitmore is faculty associate for First-Year and Retention Programs in Science at the University of Wisconsin's WISCIENCE program. WISCIENCE (Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement) is a multi-faceted program focusing on student retention and success (wiscience.wisc.edu).

Whitmore's scholarly work represents an integration of the scholarship of higher education, educational history, leadership and sociology, focusing on two interwoven strands of investigation: inquiry into the influence of racial difference on teaching and learning, and the development of a historically and communally informed type of leadership knowledge.

Whitmore's visit is sponsored by the Excellence in Undergraduate Education (EUE) program.

Blackboard Ally is Coming!

The offices of Educational Outreach, Disability Support Services, and Information Technology Services are collaborating to bring Blackboard Ally to your Blackboard courses. 

Blackboard Ally is a product that provides alternate formats for uploaded PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and HTML content, in order to meet the needs of diverse learners. For example, it can convert a text document to an audio file. It also assists faculty in making content more accessible by pointing out where formatting can be improved or providing alternative file types.

Apply Today for a Safe Zone Scholarship, Deadline March 15

Safe Zone is now accepting applications through Thursday, March 15 for the Safe Zone Scholarship for Fall 2018.

The Safe Zone Scholarship will be awarded to a SIUE Student who demonstrates positive contributions to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community at SIUE.

Two recipients will receive $500 for the fall 2018 semester.

College Student Personnel Administration Program Visit Day, March 16

Don't miss SIUE's College Student Personnel Administration Program Visit Day:

This full-day event includes a continental breakfast, lunch, networking reception and off-campus networking event. Find out how a master’s in college student personnel administration can help you advance your career or begin a career in higher education student affairs.

• Speak with faculty and current students in the program
• Network with SIUE Division of Student Affairs staff
• Interview for graduate assistantships with SIUE Student Affairs, as well as off-campus partner institutions

Application fee waivers will be provided at the event. Priority consideration for admission and assistantships will be given to event attendees.

Nominations Open through March 16 for Honorary Degrees & Distinguished Service Awards

The Honorary Degrees and Distinguished Service Award Committee invites nominations from the University community for consideration by the committee. All departments and schools are asked to consider and submit well-deserving nominations, particularly for individuals who show an ongoing connection or commitment to the SIUE community and region.

Please visit, siue.edu/ugov/faculty/hdegree/ for details on the criteria for submission and the nomination forms. A list of former recipients is available for review on the University Archives website: siue.edu/lovejoylibrary/archives/commence.shtml.

Please note that current University employees are not eligible for awards.

Nominations must be received no later than Friday. March 16. Submissions should include the appropriate nomination form along with biographical information.
