The Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society is hosting its next book exchange:

Members of the SIUE community are invited to bring a book, and then take one from the inventory available. Book purchases can also be made for a nominal cost.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897, and is one of the nation’s oldest and most selective honor societies for all academic disciplines. Chapter 203 was established at SIUE in 1978.

SIUE Office of Educational Outreach invites you to attend the spring 2018 Lifelong Learning Speakers Series every Wednesday on the campus of SIUE.

Don't Miss the Next University Staff Senate Meeting, March 1

The University Staff Senate's meetings are open to constituency members. Non-senate members can come and listen. Participation depends on the agenda being discussed and/or prior approval from the president of the University Staff Senate. The next University Staff Senate Executive meeting will be held:

Staff Senate Executive meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month. Staff Senate meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month, with the exception of July during which there is no full Senate meeting.

Student Awards Available through Phi Kappa Phi, Applications due March 2

The SIUE Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society is offering three awards to students. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 2.

The awards include:
Undergraduate Scholarship: One scholarship of up to $750 (which must be applied to undergraduate or graduate tuition and fees at SIUE) may be awarded. Eligibility requirements: Must be an undergraduate with at least junior standing (60 hours) at the end of the fall semester 2017, must have a minimum GPA of 3.5, and must have earned at least 24 semester hours at SIUE by the end of the fall semester 2017. Students with a 100 percent waiver for tuition and fees are not eligible. Please note: Applicants DO NOT have to be PKP members. An additional award of $250 is available if the recipient is a PKP member or an inductee at the April 2018 ceremony.

Undergraduate Paper Contest: Three cash prizes of $200, $100 and $50 will be awarded for papers meeting the criteria. Submissions are to be scholarly essays or research papers on any academic topic that can be understood by a lay audience. This contest is open to ANY SIUE undergraduate.

Graduate Fellowship: Graduating seniors with superior academic and leadership records, who are or will be members of Phi Kappa Phi by the application deadline and who have applied to enroll as a full-time student in a post baccalaureate program of study for the 2018-19 academic year, are eligible to apply. One fellowship award of up to $1,000 will be given through our local chapter, and then this person will be entered into the national contest where 51 fellowships of $5,000 and six fellowships of $15,000 will be awarded (SIUE nominees have won a national award in the past!).

Nominate a Phenomenal Woman for the 4th Annual Luncheon, Deadline March 5

The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion invites you to nominate a Phenomenal Woman at SIUE or in the community. The annual Phenomenal Women's Luncheon is held during Women's History Month at SIUE.

The awardees and nominators will be invited to attend a luncheon honoring and celebrating women from all walks of life who have made contributions to diversity and inclusion at SIUE, the region, the nation and the world.

Nominations must be received no later than Monday, March 5, and awardees will be notified via email by Friday, March 9.

Luke M. Snell is a concrete consultant and SIUE emeritus professor. He has done extensive consulting work on construction and concrete problems throughout the U.S., Saudi Arabia and Mongolia. He has also written more than  400 articles on concrete, construction materials and construction education.

Justice Delayed vs. Justice Denied

Speaker: Joyce Lakes

Joyce M. Lakes is the author of Justice Delayed vs. Justice Denied. Joyce was the first African American female to become the state-wide manager of the Incarcerated Prison Program in Illinois from 1998 until her retirement in 2002.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Staff Senate Scholarship, awarded during the fall and summer terms for deserving high school graduates or continuing undergraduate students at SIUE who are the child, grandchild, spouse or civil union partner of a presently employed or retired civil service or professional staff employee at SIUE.
