Don't Miss Feb. 28 Guest Presentation “United We Fall and Divided We Stand?"

The campus community is invited to attend a guest presentation on the important topic of intractable conflicts.

Michael Pratt, PhD, O’Connor Professor in the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, will present “United We Fall and Divided We Stand?: Unconventional Lessons for Addressing Intractable Conflicts.”
2-3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 28
Art & Design Building, Room 1104

Pratt will speak about conflicts between groups that are not only long-lasting, but difficult to move beyond (i.e. political, religious, etc.). He will discuss how such conflicts come about and why groups, at some level, may even be invested in keeping them going. He also draws upon his own research to offer unconventional lessons he has learned about successfully managing these types of conflicts.

Jill Schreiber, PhD, and Jayme Swanke, PhD, assistant professors of social work, are coordinating Pratt’s visit, through CAS’ Targeted Funding Initiative, which is supporting projects of faculty development and innovation. They emphasize the broad appeal of Pratt’s presentation topic, as his background includes experience and expertise of interest to social work, psychology and business, as well as other fields.”

“When people’s identity is tied to “I am not them,” it makes it difficult to mediate and come together to find solutions to issues,” Schreiber said. “Dr. Pratt’s visit will offer a different way of theorizing or framing how to get along and communicate with people who may be different than you, in multiple contexts.”

Contact Schreiber at jischre@siue.edu or Swanke at jswanke@siue.edu with any questions.

SIUE Closes out Black Heritage Month

SIUE will close out its Black Heritage Month with the following event:

The "E"mmy's
7 p.m.

Watch for Continuous Improvement Conference, March 16

The Faculty Development Council and the Office of the Provost will present the Continuous Improvement Conference on Friday, March 16.

8:30-9 a.m.  Breakfast
9 a.m.-Noon Engaging Modern Learners Workshop
Morris University Center, Mississipppi/Illinois Rooms

Description: What factors influence student motivation and desire to learn? Obviously, there are some influences beyond the professor’s control, but research in educational psychology suggests one thing we can do to increase student engagement is to create learning environments that are in some ways linked to, and supportive of, the current student culture. During this participatory session, we will briefly review the literature regarding the culture of the millennial student and apply the findings of the presenter’s research regarding modern learners.

12-1:30 p.m. Break
1:30–3 p.m.  Creating “I Don’t Want to Miss a Moment of This!” Learning Environments
Peck Hall, Room 1402

As college professors, we are all experts in our content area. However, we may not be aware of the body of research within educational psychology that provides insights into motivating our students. During this presentation we will briefly review the literature regarding student motivation and share the findings of Dr. Price’s own research on this topic. Throughout the presentation, participants will be encouraged to reflect on their methods and the learning environments they create. Digitized video clips of student interviews will be utilized in order to convey practical steps we can take to increase student motivation, interest, and desire to learn in the courses we teach.
