Please join us if you have experience with service learning to share, or if you are interested in learning more.

Office of Educational Outreach's "In Search of Wellness: The Wholeness of Health" Begins Today

SIUE’s Office of Educational Outreach will present: "In Search of Wellness: The Wholeness of Health"

7:30 p.m.
Tuesdays, Today-March 27
Glen Carbon Library
198 S. Main St.
Glen Carbon, IL

The cost is $49.

Are you living with the vitality and energy you desire in your life? Did you know that there is more to wellness than just exercising and eating well? Though there are a number of different models used to represent wellness or well-being, each model represents wellness as a multi-faceted design and focuses on how each component relates to the other with the emphasis on wholeness. In this class, after gaining an understanding of a comprehensive wellness view in week one, subsequent weeks will explore each dimension in depth, paired with tips and actionable ways to improve your own wellness one dimension at a time.

Instructor Carin Dehmer has worked in the health and wellness field for more than 25 years, from fitness instructor to wellness strategist and worksite wellness. She has a bachelor's in biology/exercise science from Missouri State University and a master’s in health education from the University of Central Arkansas. Dehmer is a certified wellness practitioner, and is worksite wellness certified from the Chapman Institute and the National Wellness Institute.

Be a Part of the New SIUE Sustainability Advisory Group

The SIUE Sustainability Advisory Group (SAG) was created Feb. 14, 2008, by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration to assess progress on existing initiatives and to vet ideas for future efforts around the topic of sustainability. Since then, and despite budget setbacks, sustainability efforts at SIUE have not slowed. Instead, every day more energy is put into building a more sustainable campus and community.

After a brief hiatus, SAG is being relaunched with a new name – the Sustainability ACTION Group – and with a new structure. The new structure involves a steering committee that is charged with:
• Drafting operating papers
• Creating a sustainability plan
• Developing a communication strategy
• Overseeing STARS
• Mapping sustainability assets
• Identifying potential sources of funding for projects

The SAG will also be made up of working groups initially focusing on energy and food, with plans for water, curriculum, transportation, and waste groups to be added in the future.

The SAG is open to all students, staff and faculty who are interested in or are already working in areas related to sustainability. If you would like to become more involved in the steering committee, or in one or more of the workgroups, please attend one of the kick-off meetings listed below, or email Steering Committee Chair Connie Frey Spurlock at cfrey@siue.edu.

Don't Miss Feb. 28 Guest Presentation “United We Fall and Divided We Stand?"

The campus community is invited to attend a guest presentation on the important topic of intractable conflicts.

Michael Pratt, PhD, O’Connor Professor in the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, will present “United We Fall and Divided We Stand?: Unconventional Lessons for Addressing Intractable Conflicts.”
2-3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 28
Art & Design Building, Room 1104

Pratt will speak about conflicts between groups that are not only long-lasting, but difficult to move beyond (i.e. political, religious, etc.). He will discuss how such conflicts come about and why groups, at some level, may even be invested in keeping them going. He also draws upon his own research to offer unconventional lessons he has learned about successfully managing these types of conflicts.

Jill Schreiber, PhD, and Jayme Swanke, PhD, assistant professors of social work, are coordinating Pratt’s visit, through CAS’ Targeted Funding Initiative, which is supporting projects of faculty development and innovation. They emphasize the broad appeal of Pratt’s presentation topic, as his background includes experience and expertise of interest to social work, psychology and business, as well as other fields.”

“When people’s identity is tied to “I am not them,” it makes it difficult to mediate and come together to find solutions to issues,” Schreiber said. “Dr. Pratt’s visit will offer a different way of theorizing or framing how to get along and communicate with people who may be different than you, in multiple contexts.”

Contact Schreiber at jischre@siue.edu or Swanke at jswanke@siue.edu with any questions.
