Join in Nationwide Moment of Silence Today on the Quad to Commemorate Echol Cole and Robert Walker

SIUE is joining a nationwide commemoration by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) of the deaths of two sanitation workers -- Echol Cole and Robert Walker -- whose deaths helped spark the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers' Strike.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Sanitation Workers’ Strike.

One minute of silence will be observed:

Members of the SIUE community willing to read from articles about the tragedy, text from King’s Memphis speech, or use other articles or appropriate original works, can contact Vicki Daggett at vdagget@siue.edu  or 650-5067 to schedule a time.

On Feb. 1, 1968, a storm forced Memphis sanitation workers Echol Cole and Robert Walker to seek shelter in the back of their truck. The workers’ repeated warnings to management about faulty equipment proved tragically prophetic that day when the truck’s compactor kicked on, crushing the two men to death.

Their AFSCME co-workers decided they had had enough. They had worked for far too long for poverty wages, without any benefits, in dangerous conditions, and with no respect. They voted to strike, and despite facing intense animosity, they bravely continued their strike for more than two months.

They were joined in their struggle by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who traveled to Memphis to march in solidarity. King was assassinated after making a powerful and historic speech in support of the workers’ struggle for dignity and justice.

CAS' Targeting Funding Initiative Presentation Feb. 28, “United We Fall and Divided We Stand?"

The campus community is invited to attend a guest presentation on the important topic of intractable conflicts.

Michael Pratt, PhD, O’Connor Professor in the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, will present “United We Fall and Divided We Stand?: Unconventional Lessons for Addressing Intractable Conflicts.”
2-3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 28
Art & Design Building, Room 1104

Pratt will speak about conflicts between groups that are not only long-lasting, but difficult to move beyond (i.e. political, religious, etc.). He will discuss how such conflicts come about and why groups, at some level, may even be invested in keeping them going. He also draws upon his own research to offer unconventional lessons he has learned about successfully managing these types of conflicts.

Jill Schreiber, PhD, and Jayme Swanke, PhD, assistant professors of social work, are coordinating Pratt’s visit, through CAS’ Targeted Funding Initiative, which is supporting projects of faculty development and innovation. They emphasize the broad appeal of Pratt’s presentation topic, as his background includes experience and expertise of interest to social work, psychology and business, as well as other fields.”

“When people’s identity is tied to “I am not them,” it makes it difficult to mediate and come together to find solutions to issues,” Schreiber said. “Dr. Pratt’s visit will offer a different way of theorizing or framing how to get along and communicate with people who may be different than you, in multiple contexts.”

Contact Schreiber at jischre@siue.edu or Swanke at jswanke@siue.edu with any questions.
