Retirees must present your state health insurance card and document the last four digits of their social security number in order to receive the vaccine at no charge.

Employees not covered under a State health plan:
Health Service has two options for you this year.

  • You may receive the immunization at a cost of $30 (cash or check) from SIUE Health staff; OR
  • You may receive the vaccine from Gateway Regional Health staff (adjacent to our flu clinic location) on campus. If you choose Gateway, please bring your ID and insurance card to use when completing claim form documentation.

Attend Cheryl Hanvey's October Employee Recognition Award Reception Today

Cheryl Hanvey, assistant to the provost, is the recipient of the October Employee Recognition Award. Cheryl was nominated by Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Denise Cobb with support from Dr. Tom Jordan and Dr. Erin Behnen.

Office of the Provost

You can also send Cheryl a congratulatory email to chanvey@siue.edu

“From the moment I joined the Office of the Provost, I recognized Cheryl as the 'go to' person in the office, keeping everything and everyone moving and organized," said Cobb. "She knows what needs to be done, is extremely efficient at her work, goes beyond expectations to make sure things are done on time and well, and is always very positive and helpful.”

“Wow, what an honor to be chosen not once, but twice as Employee of the Month. The e is a fabulous place to work, and the people in the Provost’s Office are the best, bar none," said Hanvey. "We have a very special team—a family—who all work together for the good of our students, the University and each other. While I’m thrilled to receive the award, I’m renaming it “Office of the Month” as the entire office is deserving."

Join Today's STEM Center Journal Club Discussion on Computational Thinking

The STEM Center is hosting another round of journal club discussions focused on computational thinking.

Students are increasingly required to think analytically and mathematically, but what are best practices on the topic? Come read articles and find out!

Noon
Thursdays
STEM Resource Center - Vadalabene Center Room 1304

Today -  "Computational Thinking in K−12: A Review of the State of the Field" (Grover and Pea, 2013). This article will provide an overview of current thinking and an introduction to some techniques.

October 27 - "Using Mathematical and Computational Thinking in Early Grades Science Classrooms" (Gilbert et al. 2016). A short discussion will be held on how computational thinking is expressed in current teaching frameworks like the Next Generation Science Standards.

All are welcome! Send any questions, or requests for articles, to Colin Wilson at colwils@siue.edu.

Catch Dr. Olga Bezhanova's Sabbatical Research Presentation Today

Olga Bezhanova, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, will present her sabbatical research project, entitled "Spain's Artistic response to the Global Economic Crisis."

3:30 p.m.
Today
Peck Hall, Room 2403

The global economic crisis of 2008-12 impacted Spain in an especially painful manner. Spain is suffering from unprecedented levels of unemployment, its welfare system is crumbling, and even the country's hard-won democracy is unraveling. Spain's novelists, poets and essayists have placed the economic devastation brought by the crisis at the center of their artistic production. The works of art they have created make it clear that, rather than a crisis of a relatively short duration that will eventaully end (or has ended in some countries), we are witnessing a profound transformation in the very nature of the nation-state model.

Happening Today: Going Lecture, Presented by Dr. Andrew Neath

Dr. Andrew Neath is the 2016 recipient of the SIUE College of Arts and Science’s distinguished William and Margaret Going Endowed Professorship Award.

As part of the Going Award, Neath will expand upon his research during a public lecture, entitled, “The Replication Crisis in Science: A Statistical Perspective.”

7 p.m.
Today

Morris University Center, Conference Room A

“There’s a growing concern over the large number of scientific findings accepted as truth, that later fail upon attempts at replication,” Neath said. “Public support for science requires that its results be trusted. My presentation will be aimed at a general audience, since errors in statistical reasoning damage our decision-making ability, not just in science, but also in fields such as law, medicine and business.”

Neath will share multiple examples of how poor statistical reasoning has led to damaging outcomes, and conversely, how proper statistical reasoning perfectly explains what at first glance may seem contradictory.
