Lifelong Learning Classes Today Look at Gender and Plants

"The Greatest Show on Earth: Masculinity, Femininity, and the Performance of Gender” will be presented by Alison Reiheld, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Philosophy, and director of the Women’s Study Program.
10:30-11:45 a.m.
Today
Morris University Center, Illinois Room

We often think of gender as something we are born with, even as a key part of our identity. These may be part of gender, but some have argued gender is also, and maybe even mostly, a performance. Gender is a major part of who we are in nearly every culture on the globe. Is it the greatest show on earth?

“Plants in Space: How plant cells respond to life on the International Space Station” with Darron Luesse, PhD, associate professor and assistant chair in the Department of Biological Sciences.
1:15-2:30 p.m.
Today
Morris University Center, Illinois Room

Because future long term space missions will rely on plants for food and oxygen, learn more about the journey that led Luesse and a colleague, Dr. Sarah Wyatt of Ohio University to a grant from NASA to investigate how plants adjust and cope with the stress of life in space.

The SIUE community of faculty, retired faculty, staff and students are always invited and may attend for FREE.
The cost is $5 for the public to attend.

For a complete synopsis about these and other upcoming presentations, please visit Lifelong Learning or contact Patty Bade at pbade@siue.edu or 650-3985.

We welcome your comments, questions, and participation in the program.

A wide range of careers are available to students with a strong foundation in Urban Studies. Please visit the program website for details.

If you know of any students who are interested in pursuing the minor, please have them contact Dr. James Hanlon in the Department of Geography, at jhanlon@siue.edu. If you are interested in promoting the minor to students in your program and courses, promotional material is available upon request.

Please Give to SECA's Charitable Fund Drive

SIUE employees have been very generous in their efforts to support charitable agencies. SECA (State and University Employees Combined Appeal) Charitable Fund Drive provides all employees the opportunity to donate to the charitable causes of their choice to enhance the quality of life for all.

Twelve organizations will be part of this year’s campaign: American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Community Shares of Illinois, Community Health Charities, EarthShare, Special Olympics, United Way, United Negro College Fund, Global Impact, Independent Charities of America, Black United Fund of Illinois and America’s Charities.

For more information regarding this year’s drive, including agency/charity codes and to fill out the online pledge form, please visit  SECA donation form. You can also request a paper pledge form by calling Human Resources at 650-2190. The form should be completed by Wednesday, Nov. 2 and returned to: SECA Fund Drive, Box 1040, Edwardsville, IL, 62026-1040.

Please note that you do not have to submit a 2016 pledge form to continue an existing contribution through payroll deduction. However, even though all payroll deductions submitted by SIUE display the employee’s name and amount per charity, the SECA campaign uses the annual pledge forms to communicate with the sub charities that receive donations from larger charities. We have been informed that when subsequent year donations are sent to the appropriate sub charity, the charity notes the donation received from SIUE staff, but does not break it out by employee. This does not affect the tax deductibility of an employee's charitable donation. Per SECA, if an employee wants the charity to credit specific donations with their name, a new pledge form must be completed each year.

The State of Illinois regulations limit your use of payroll deduction to a maximum of four organizations. If you want to donate to additional agencies through SECA, you may do so by check or money order.

We thank you on behalf of each of the agencies and the many families and individuals who will be helped by your kind generosity. Your consideration of this annual fund drive is appreciated.

For more information about this year’s charitable fund drive, please contact Human Resources at 650-2190.
