The theme for this year's SIUE Employee Banquet, hosted by the University Staff Senate, is “No Time to Siesta, It’s Time to Fiesta!” The banquet will be held:

6 p.m. dinner
Wednesday, Oct. 12
Morris University Center Meridian Ballroom

Dinner will be a buffet of tortilla chips, flour tortillas, grilled chicken, queso, roasted corn and black beans, refried beans, seasoned rice, pico de gallo, sour cream, shredded lettuce, guacamole and cinnamon crisps. Coffee, iced tea and water will be included, and a cash bar will be available.

There will be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and the Fiesta alcohol package raffle.

The banquet is open to all staff, faculty and retirees. Guests are welcome and encouraged. The cost is $20 per person.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Staff Senate scholarship, awarded during fall and summer terms for deserving high school graduates or continuing undergraduate students at SIUE. Since the scholarship was first awarded in 1980, more than $40,000 has been awarded to more than 70 students. Also, each student receiving the award has graduated from the University.

We are also seeking donations that can be used for attendance prizes, baskets, raffles or the silent auction. All donations are tax-deductible, and donors will be recognized in the event program. Donations can be dropped off at the Staff Senate office in Rendleman Hall, Room 0103 or in Lovejoy Library, Room 1041 with Anne Hunter. If your donation needs to be picked up, please contact Anne Hunter at 650-3050. Please let us know how you would like your name to appear in the program.

Attend Going Lecture, Presented by Dr. Andrew Neath

Dr. Andrew Neath is the 2016 recipient of the SIUE College of Arts and Science’s distinguished William and Margaret Going Endowed Professorship Award.

As part of the Going Award, Neath will expand upon his research during a public lecture, entitled, “The Replication Crisis in Science: A Statistical Perspective.”

7 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 20
Morris University Center, Conference Room A

“There’s a growing concern over the large number of scientific findings accepted as truth, that later fail upon attempts at replication,” Neath said. “Public support for science requires that its results be trusted. My presentation will be aimed at a general audience, since errors in statistical reasoning damage our decision-making ability, not just in science, but also in fields such as law, medicine and business.”

Neath will share multiple examples of how poor statistical reasoning has led to damaging outcomes, and conversely, how proper statistical reasoning perfectly explains what at first glance may seem contradictory.
