SIU Trustees Approve Contracts for SIUE Chancellor and School of Business Interim Dean

The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees, at its regularly scheduled meeting on the Springfield campus today,
approved contracts for SIUE chancellor Randall Pembrook and School of Business Interim Dean Tim Schoenecker.

Pembrook becomes SIUE’s ninth chancellor and will assume his new duties Monday, Aug. 1. He takes control from Interim Chancellor Stephen Hansen, who has served since August 2015 following Julie Furst-Bowe’s resignation in June 2015.

An associate professor of management and marketing in SIUE’s School of Business, Schoenecker takes the leadership reins from John Navin, who resigned at the end of the spring 2016 semester. Schoenecker has agreed to serve for a period of two years to accommodate other leadership changes within the University and retains the option to be a candidate for the permanent position.

Valor Program Selects Four SIUE Nursing Students

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Nursing has had four students selected by the Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunity Residency (VALOR) program at the Marion VA Hospital.

The students are in SIUE’s regional nursing program in Carbondale:
Melanie Lowe, of Herrin, will be in the medical/surgical unit
Denetta Magruder, of West Frankfort, will be in the Community Living Center
Kelsey O’Brien, of Arlington Heights, will be in the medicine clinics (hematology, cardiac catheterization lab and oncology)
Kaitlyn Spirk, of McHenry, will be in the emergency department
The students will rotate through each unit, working as techs with registered nurse preceptors and receiving the same starting hourly salary as an RN. They have completed orientation and are starting to work this week. Eventually, they will complete 400 hours.

SIUE Police Department and East St. Louis Charter High School Students Participate in Police Youth Camp

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Charter High School (CHS) student Rozelle Phillips has enjoyed spending the past week with Metro East law enforcement officers.

The CHS freshman was one of 60 teens, ages 12-17, who participated in the 11th annual TeamIllinois Youth Police Camp, sponsored by the Illinois State Police headquartered in Collinsville.

The main purpose of the camp, according to SIUE Chief of Police Kevin Schmoll, was to establish interpersonal relationships between area youth and law enforcement in hopes of creating better understanding between both groups. Representing the SIUE Police Department among the approximate 30 police officers were Lt. Lisa Johnson and Sgt. Tara Vaughan.
