City of Edwardsville to Lease Cougar Lake Pool

Members of the Edwardsville City Council have approved a lease agreement with SIUE to operate Cougar Lake Pool and make it available to members of the community. The Village of Glen Carbon is considering an Intergovernmental Agreement in order to make the pool available to its residents.

The pool sits adjacent to the Cougar Lake and includes lockers, restrooms and a concession area as well as a small splash pad for the youngest visitors. Directional signage will be visible during the summer months on North University Dr. and at Lot 10, southwest of The Gardens.  While parking on campus typically requires a paid permit, parking at this lot during the summer will be free to all who are visiting the pool.

Family memberships start at $300, senior citizen memberships are $125 and daily passes will also be available for $5 per day or $4 per day for seniors and children 4-15. Kids three-and-under swim free. Private rentals will also be available for birthday parties, reunions and more.

Lifelong Learning Opportunities, April 27 and 28

SIUE faculty, staff and students are invited to attend for free, this week's Lifelong Learning opportunities. The cost is $5 for the general public.

Shifting Alliances in the Middle East is presented by Dr. Suranjan Weeraratne, assistant professor of political science. With conflicts and alliances between state and non-state actors in the region constantly shifting, what can the U.S. do to secure its interests in the Middle East without causing further disruption?

10:30–11:45 a.m.
Wednesday, April 27
Morris University Center, Illinois Room

The Strange Crusade of Willis M. Everett is presented by Dr. James Weingartner, emeritus professor in the Department of Historical Studies. An Atlanta attorney was appointed by the U.S. Army to defend 74 Nazi Waffen-SS accused of murdering American POWs and Belgian civilians during the Battle of the Bulge. All were convicted in one of the most notorious war crime cases, but Everett, convinced the trial was travesty of justice, fought for years to reverse the decision. Was Everett a heroic fighter for justice or a dupe for the Nazis? You decide.

1:15–2:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 27
Morris University Center, Illinois Room

You don’t say is presented by Ms. Karen Swanner, marketing specialist in the SIUE Morris University Center. When it comes to communication we think about spoken words, but what about non-verbal communication? We’ll take a look at how we communicate with others using our eyes, posture and other aspects of body language, discuss how non-verbal communication plays various roles in our lives, and how meanings differ based on culture, age group and gender. You’ll learn how you are communicating with others and how to read what other people are saying to you when they are not talking!

9:30–10:30 a.m.
Thursday, April 28
Main Street Community Center, 1003 N. Main St., Edwardsville

More details about the presentations content can be found online.
