Under the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, Safe Zone's mission is to develop a campus community of allies and provide support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students, faculty, and staff with the ultimate goal of developing SIUE as a safe and welcoming place for LGBT people.

Meeting for Exercise Science Club Fit Competition, Today and Feb. 11

The Exercise Science Club is once again holding its Annual “Commit to be Fit” competition for all faculty and staff.

This friendly competition encourages SIUE faculty and staff to be active by competing as teams of 5-7 to accrue active fitness minutes each week.

Need more information? There will be two optional informational sessions:

7-8 p.m. Today in the Morris University Center University Club

5-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 in the Morris University Center Missouri Room

Some things to know:
• You can form your own team with your co-workers or friends on campus (teams do not have to be from within the same department).
• Each team will be assigned a student coach from the Exercise Science Undergraduate Program or the Exercise Physiology Graduate Program to help with goal setting, motivation and accountability.
• The competition officially begins Monday, Feb. 22 and runs through Sunday, April 17
• The last day to sign up is Friday, Feb. 12

We have a team, now what?
• Once you have your team together, assign a team captain and decide on a winning team name! (This year, an award will be given for the most creative team name.)
• Team captains should email siueexercisescienceclub10@gmail.com with their team name in the subject line or their last name if they are signing up as an individual to be assigned to the team.
• The email should include ALL team members first and last names, as well as their primary email.
• Coaches will begin emailing their teams during the week of February 15, once all teams have been registered.

Saturday Studio Art Workshops Begin Feb. 13

The SIUE Department of Art & Design will hold Saturday Studio Art Workshops:

9:30-11:30 a.m.
February 13-April 16 (no classes on March 12)
Art & Design West

Studio instruction is being offered for primary, intermediate and junior/senior high school students. All classes are designed to stimulate creative growth of students, with emphasis on developing skills in the use of the media and generating ideas for creative expression. Art teachers in these Saturday Studio classes are becoming certified art specialists and are art majors in the Department of Art & Design.

The theme this year: “KADIMA 2016: Together We Move Forward Africa.” Kadima is a South African word, with Hebrew origin, that means “forward.”

SEHHB Fundraiser at Edison's, Feb. 17

A fundraiser for the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior will be held Wednesday, Feb 17.

On that day, Edison’s Entertainment Complex will donate 10 percent of food and beverage sales and 20 percent of entertainment purchases to the SEHHB.

Please stop by Edison’s with the whole family at 5 p.m. to enjoy food, beverages and entertainment. All you will need to do is let them know you are with the SIUE.

Nominate a Phenomenal Woman at SIUE by Feb. 22

The SIUE Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion invites you to nominate a Phenomenal Woman at SIUE or in the community. 

The nominee and person nominating them will be invited to attend a luncheon honoring and celebrating women from all walks of life who have made contributions to diversity and inclusion at SIUE, the region, the nation and the world. 

Through the recognition of these contributions, the annual Phenomenal Women’s Luncheon hopes to inspire other women to embrace and promote diversity within their own lives and the lives of others.

The Speech Center, a part of Learning Support Services, located in the Student Success Center is open throughout the week to offer assistance to all students seeking help with their presentation skills.  

To assist in encouraging students to use our services, we will be happy to come to your classroom to do an introductory presentation about the services we offer. We also offer in-class workshops as well as workshops in the speech center itself on a number of topics, including speech anxiety, outline and research help and group presentations.  

If you have a class where students are required to give presentations, and you think that they could benefit from our guidance, we would love to hear from you.
