Greetings from the Dean

As we begin to wrap up the spring semester, I am amazed at how much we can pack into a year. In the short amount of time since the last newsletter:

  • SIUE’s student branch of the Society of Women Engineers had yet another very successful Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.
  • Three of our alumni were recognized among the St. Louis Business Journal’s 40 under 40 class of 2018.
  • Our Construction Leadership Institute celebrated its 15th graduating class.
  • Eight computer science students successfully hosted the department’s 3rd eHacks event.
  • The Cougar Baja teams made successful runs at Michigan Tech’s annual Blizzard Baja event.

In addition, we are very grateful to the generous donors who are making our Student Design Center a reality. The project continues to move forward, and we are hopeful that it will be completed during the spring 2019 semester!

Sincerely,

School Hosts 3rd Annual eHacks Event

The Department of Computer Science hosted its third annual eHacks event March 2-4 in the T-REX Innovation Center in St. Louis. Sponsored by area technology companies, the annual hackathon challenged approximately 90 collegiate participants, comprising 24 teams, to build something new with software and computer hardware.

A pair of brothers from Maryville proved victorious. The duo, comprised of Owen Reiser, a freshman at SIUE, and his brother, Quentin, earned the Most Innovative award for their creation of Art Drop, a mobile graffiti app.

SIUE Finishes 9th at Blizzard Baja

SIUE's Cougar Baja team had two cars make successful runs at Michigan Tech’s annual Blizzard Baja during the weekend of February 17-18 in Houghton, Mich.

Senior Seth Kirchner, president of SIUE Cougar Baja, and 14 teammates saw their No. 94 car finish ninth overall, while their No. 34 car placed 23rd in a field of 47 cars.

Sixth Annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day Hosts Hundreds

The Society of Women Engineers at SIUE hosted more than 280 young girls during its sixth annual “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” Saturday, Feb. 17, in the Engineering Building.

Girls from grades 5-8 attended the daylong event and completed five activities covering the fields of civil, mechanical, electrical, industrial and computer science. Small groups worked together to design and create their projects. The creative problem-solving aspects of engineering were discussed and explored, and participants were encouraged to ask questions and use their imaginations.
