Dean's Message

Greetings from the SIUE School of Engineering.

Summer has turned into fall, our faculty and staff have moved their focus from our summer activities to the new academic year, and we have welcomed our students to the fall 2015 semester.

As you read the contents of our newsletter, I hope you enjoy the brief glimpse into our world where our students, faculty and staff work to develop answers to current and future problems. You will see the talent, dedication, and vision of our incredible engineering community.

Until next time,

Hasan Sevim, PhD
Dean, SIUE School of Engineering

Solar Car Team Races in Formula Sun Grand Prix

The solar car team achieved a new personal best at the 2015 Formula Sun Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. SIUE was one of 15 universities from the U.S. and Canada that competed July 26-31 at the Circuit of the Americas.

School Showcases Facilities at Inaugural Event

SIUE's Engineering and Technology (ENGTEC) partnered with the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center to host the inaugural Manufacturing Matchmaking event for the Metro East on August 12. Approximately 40 manufacturing professionals and suppliers participated in speed-networking meetings and toured the School of Engineering facilities.

Students Build Advanced Water Treatment System

Students in the water treatment technology program at the Environmental Resources Training Center recently installed an advanced wastewater treatment process at the center. Under the guidance of their instructors, the students converted a 35-year-old obsolete treatment system into an advanced Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor.

Students Gain International Experience

In the span of just over a week, six engineering students expanded their practical knowledge of engineering software programs and added international travel and collaboration to their academic experience. The mechanical engineering students, along with faculty members Soondo Kweon, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and H. Felix Lee, professor and chair of industrial engineering, traveled to Tongmyung University in Busan, South Korea, for a summer capstone design camp.

School Welcomes Future Engineers

Building water filters, robotics, and making computer apps and games are just a few things students got to do at the 2015 School of Engineering summer camps. Approximately 60 students from grades 9-12 attended the camp, staying in Bluff Hall as part of the residential camping experience.
