Holiday Greetings

As the year draws to a close, it is a wonderful time to look back at our achievements over the past year. The 2018 Dean’s Report for the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) offers the perfect opportunity to do just that.

The report will provide you with all of the details about:

  • The renovation and reopening of the original Science Building
  • New scholarships in the College
  • Some of our outstanding students and faculty
  • CAS alumni who were inducted this year into the Alumni Hall of Fame.

In addition, the Dean’s Report, along with the articles contained in this newsletter, will give you information on some of the upcoming events for 2019, such as the Lazerson Lecture Series, founded by former SIUE President Earl Lazerson and his wife Ann.

On behalf of the faculty, staff and students in SIUE’s College of Arts and Sciences, I want to thank you for your support of our programs. I hope this holiday season will be one filled with peace, comfort, and happiness for you and yours.

Sincerely,
Gregory Budzban
Dean, College of Arts and Sciences

Ribbon Cutting at Fuller Dome Gallery

Two generations of Buckminster Fuller’s family traveled to Edwardsville to celebrate a “Bucky Weekend” honoring the visionary inventor’s legacy in the region. The Center for Spirituality and Sustainability hosted an opening reception for its new Fuller Dome Gallery November 9. The exhibition space is located inside the Buckminster Fuller-designed Fuller Dome on the campus of SIUE.

Bucky Fuller’s daughter, Allegra Fuller Snyder, his granddaughter Alexandra May, and her husband Sam May attended.

Ethics Bowl Scheduled in January

The Department of Philosophy will host its 5th Annual High School Ethics Bowl at SIUE on January 26. Sponsored by the Lyceum student group, this competition involves teams of high school students who analyze realistic cases involving ethical issues.

SIUE philosophy faculty, students and alumni serve as judges in the competition. This is one of only two regional competitions being held in the state of Illinois, and teams in previous events have come from as far away as Tennessee.
