Message from the Chair

Greetings from the Department of Economics and Finance at SIUE!

We welcomed a new finance faculty member, Dr. Jie Ying from the University of Iowa. We are in the process of recruiting a new economics faculty member. Our alumni–Nikola Bundalo, Dylan Corgan, Kevin Kaufhold, Nicole Ramig and Kelly Ayres–are going to be teaching in the spring semester. It is good to see familiar faces and to have our students benefit from the knowledge our alumni have gained.

During this academic year, Dr. Riza Demirer and Dr. Shrikant Jategaonkar have taken sabbaticals to work on their research. Dr. Demirer was away in the fall and Dr. Jategaonkar is away this spring semester.

We are now admitting students to the new, expanded finance and economics specializations in the BSBA program. We are also adding electives at the MBA level and the undergraduate level. The department is working to acquire a couple of new databases through the School of Business so we can integrate this data in our instruction and research.

We are offering the following new courses this year in the new undergraduate and graduate curricula to provide our students with a diverse set of elective choices so they can pursue their career goals:

  • Entrepreneurial finance (MBA)
  • Economics of Health Care (MBA)
  • Fixed Income Securities (BS)
  • Law and Economics (BS)
  • Empirical Business Applications (BS)

Department News

Dr. Ying now advises the Economics and Finance Club. The following are highlights from the club:

  • Kevin Doak and Darren Wright from TheBANK of Edwardsville presented a session to students on the mutual fund information from Morningstar.
  • The club set up an investment competition using Howthemarketworks.com, a free stock market game platform. This was the main club event for learning how to execute trades.

International Travel Study

We often hear from our School of Business alumni that they wish they had traveled internationally while in school. Employers are increasingly seeking out individuals who have had international experience, and this international experience is helping our students stand out among the competition. Students and alumni report that studying abroad changes their lives in many ways, including enhancing what they are studying and opening doors to new possibilities and new ways of thinking. Alumni in the News

Currently living in Weldon Springs, Mo., Scott Thoma is pretty familiar with the ins and outs of SIUE. He graduated with a BS in business administration in 1998 and an MS in economics/finance in 2000.

Focus on Faculty

Dr. Jie Ying has had a paper accepted by the top-tier journal, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.

Dr. Riza Demirer has had 10 papers accepted recently and these studies are forthcoming in journals in 2019. An interesting study of his was on presidential cycles (Economics Letters, June issue). He and his co-authors show that co-movement of stock and bond markets can partly be explained by presidential cycles. This is something to keep in mind for the next election.

Laura Wolff was a speaker at the International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta, where she spoke on how to expand business through exporting.

Dr. Ariel Belasen has already co-authored three studies this year, including one with Dr. Marlon Tracey and another with Dr. Riza Demirer.

Dr. Ali Kutan has had 13 papers accepted since last year, and also organized and chaired a panel session on financial development at the ASSA/AEA meetings in Atlanta in January.
