Message from the Chair

Thanks for opening up the 2018 edition of the Management and Marketing Department newsletter. I am excited to share with you some of the exciting things happening in the department this year and even more excited that you are interested in hearing from us!

With every new year, I am always anxious to see what new ideas will come from our incredible faculty. We do so many different things (including management, marketing, entrepreneurship, production and operations management, business ethics, and international business), you never know where the next innovation will come from. This year, we are launching the Summer Entrepreneurship Academy, a summer camp being designed by Instructor Katie Robberson. The camp is targeted at high school students who are excited to learn how starting and running your own business works. This will be an exciting addition to the things we do in the School of Business and help us introduce the exciting world of entrepreneurship to the next generation of business leaders!

I am also pleased to let you know of two expected additions to the Department of Management and Marketing faculty: Dr. Stan Solomon and Dr. Gloria Sweida. Dr. Solomon (2015 PhD, University of Missouri-St. Louis) comes to us from Sam Houston State University. He will be contributing to our operations management courses. Dr. Sweida is currently completing her PhD at Claremont Graduate University in California. She will be contributing to our management and organizational behavior areas.

Also in this issue of the newsletter, you’ll learn about some more exciting things happening in the Department of Management and Marketing, highlighting some of our alumni, students and faculty. So read on, and thank you for staying connected with the department. As always, I invite you to share your own exciting stories (awesome job stories, fun SIUE memories, and so on) at ehershb@siue.edu.

Regards,

Dr. Edmund Hershberger
Associate Professor of Marketing and Department Chair

Defining Your Alma Mater

As the years go by, most of us will become nostalgic about the time we spent in college, often calling it “the best days of our lives.” Of course, that’s not to say your current life is not the best, but it proves that the time when you had fewer responsibilities, were focused on making good grades, and were getting ready to start your professional journey made a great impression on you. We gain so much from our college experiences, and it’s important to give back to support that same experience for others behind you. We hope this is reason enough to support the School of Business, but here are some other great reasons to give back:

  • Support of your alma mater plays a big role in determining the future and continued development of the School.
  • Scholarship donation goes a long way to support students who need financial help to offset their educational costs.
  • Investing your time and money in your alma mater helps current students gain a valuable asset—an excellent education
  • Alumni giving opens up more giving opportunities for outsiders, organizations and philanthropists.
  • When your alma mater continues to grow in prestige, the value of YOUR degree increases.

For those of you who support your alma mater already, thank you for investing in the School of Business! Others can start giving back today!

New Human Resource Certification

Starting this spring, we will offer a course for HR students to prepare for and take the aPHR certification exam after they graduate. This certification, from the Human Resource Certification Institute, is specifically for recent graduates in human resources management. Called the Associate Professional in HR (aPHR), this certification is an ‘assurance of learning’ examination allowing students to demonstrate mastery over a wide variety of HR topics and to help students become more marketable to employers.

“This course,” stated Dr. Robyn Berkley, SIUE associate professor in HR, who is also SPHR (Senior Professional in HR), “Gives our student an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and provides them with an edge as they seek employment for highly competitive HR jobs.”

The Associate Professional in HR (aPHR) course is offered through Executive Education in the School of Business, and costs $300 for a 7-week preparation course. If students are interested in this course now or in the future, they may contact Dr. Berkley directly at rberkle@siue.edu for more information on how to register for the preparation course.
