Message from the Chair

Hello alumni! Greetings from the CMIS department at SIUE. I hope this newsletter will keep you informed of changes that have occurred in the department this year.

Please continue reading to learn more about recent news in the department, activities undertaken by current students, and what faculty and alumni are doing now.

There continue to be budget woes in Illinois. We rely on alumni donations to fund scholarships for students and to fund the databases needed by students for coursework. Perhaps you remember downloading free Microsoft software and VMWARE software? Donations from alumni allow us to continue being a member of the Microsoft Academic Alliance so undergraduates and graduate students can download Project, Visio, asp.net, and any number of software products at no cost to them. Costs to access Oracle databases and SAP databases are the same – only available because of donations by alumni. For this, we thank you, and our current students thank you for your continued support.

Please visit the department, still on the second floor of Founders Hall, if you are in the area. Best wishes to all of you for a successful year.

Anne

High-Impact Campaign

Why give to the School of Business’ Honor Our Past, Build Our Future Campaign?
What better way to give back to SIUE while also thanking someone who has been vital to your SIUE education?

The SIUE School of Business faculty has impacted more than 25,000 business alumni to date. Our School and programs are consistently ranked among the very best due in large part to the dedication of our faculty. They teach, evaluate and help our students succeed. The School of Business has alumni at some of the highest level positions at some of the largest global companies. We can put our alumni toe-to-toe with the graduates of other highly regarded business programs, and they will come out on top.

STEM Designation

Both the undergraduate and graduate CMIS programs achieved STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) designation this year. This designation allows us to better compete for top students at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Read more about STEM designation.

NSF Grants Under Review
Our faculty stay engaged in the MIS field not only by teaching, but also through research. CMIS faculty currently have two grants under review with the National Science Foundation (NSF). Both submissions address the topic of gamification in the information systems curriculum. Funding would support the addition of gamification software into the CMIS 342 - Information Systems for Business course that is taken by all business majors. The utilization of the software would be studied in relation to learning outcomes, students’ perceived and actual learning, as well as student motivation. If funded, the grants would support a three-year project.

Senior Portfolio Fair
Every semester our seniors enrolled in CMIS 470 - Structured Systems Design, participate in a Senior Portfolio Fair. During the Portfolio Fair, our seniors have the chance to showcase what they have learned and what they hope to do with their degree to both faculty and industry partners. This event helps our students put together their resume and focus on what they want to do post-graduation, and it gives our industry partners a chance to get a sneak peek at our soon-to-be graduates. Many industry partners use this event as a recruiting tool for their company. If your company is interested in participating in the Senior Portfolio Fair, please contact Department Chair Anne Powell at apowell@siue.edu.

Spotlight on Students

Association of Information Technology Professionals
The student organization for CMIS majors, Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), continues to provide valuable industry connections through guest speakers and educational technical workshops. Current AITP president, Daymion Haggard, has presided over many of the technical workshops this year including resume building, LinkedIn profile management, and website creation for students' SIUE webspace. Recent CMIS graduate and former vice president of AITP, Joshua House, returned to campus to deliver a technical workshop to AITP members focused on Intrusion Detection Systems. We would also like to congratulate Dr. Andrea Hester, AITP faculty adviser, on her second win of the Enterprise Holdings Adviser of the Semester award for fall 2015.

Society for Information Management
Every April, the Society for Information Management awards five MIS scholarships. Students from SIUE, as well as SEMO, SLU, UMSL, Washington University and Missouri S&T compete for the scholarship. Isaac Abramowitz graduated in 2009 with a BS in computer management and information systems from the School of Business. Focus on Faculty

Professor Jo Ellen Moore has been working to formally inject project management into the SIUE School of Business curriculum since 2006. Two things happened in 2006: a task force identified project management as an important skill that all School of Business undergraduates need; and a specialization in project management was developed for MBA and MS CMIS graduate students. Yes, Moore had a hand in both of those. Read more about Dr. Moore.
