John Rider, 1923-2021; Was Mass Comm Faculty
John Rider, of Carbondale, died Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Manor Court in Carbondale. He was 97.
A Westfield native, Rider served as an SIUE professor of mass communications from 1968-93. He founded the Department of Mass Communications and served as its first chair. Rider published five books, including two academic books: “The Student Journalist and Broadcasting” (1968) and “Your Future in Broadcasting” (1974).
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held in Westfield, when it is safe to gather. Memorial donations in his honor may be made to: Residential Hospice/Music Therapy Program, 4215 Illinois Route 159, Glen Carbon IL 62034; Musiciansoncall.org; or the choice of donor.
