SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School Student Keya Anderson Receives Racial Harmony Award
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Charter High School student Keya Anderson received the Racial Harmony Award from the Center for Racial Harmony, recognizing her character, leadership and commitment to fostering understanding within the community.
Anderson received the award during the Center for Racial Harmony’s annual gathering held Sunday, Feb. 22. The recognition celebrates individuals who demonstrate dedication to promoting respect, compassion and cooperation across communities.
“When I received the Racial Harmony Award, I was excited and grateful to be nominated by my school administration,” said Anderson. “I didn’t expect to be chosen, and I am very thankful to be a recipient.”
Donna Moody, president of the Center for Racial Harmony, explained that the gathering’s theme, “Together We Rise by Shaping Futures,” encouraged members and community supporters to build a stronger future through perseverance and collaboration. Award recipients were formally congratulated with letters from Belleville Mayor Jenny Gain Meyer, Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski, Assistant Majority Leader Jay Hoffman, State Rep. Kevin Schmidt, State Rep. Katie Stuart and State Sen. Erica Harriss.
Anderson’s nominator, Edith Laktzian, special education coordinator at SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School, said Anderson consistently demonstrates the leadership and compassion the award is meant to recognize.
“Keya Anderson is the epitome of an individual with a peaceful disposition,” said Laktzian. “She handles stressful situations with such poise and compassion, showing care and concern for all persons involved. I have watched her defuse volatile situations with a calmness that immediately brought resolve and peace. I truly admire her spirit of kindness toward all.”
The Center for Racial Harmony, a Belleville-based nonprofit organization, works to promote understanding, cooperation and communication through community dialogue, education and mediation. The organization presents the awards annually to recognize students and community members who demonstrate leadership in fostering respect and inclusion.
