SIUE Extreme Weather Expert to Host Spotter Training
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville extreme weather expert Alan W. Black, PhD, assistant professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) is hosting storm spotter training in Morris University Center (MUC) Mississippi/Illinois Room, Wednesday, February 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Free parking will be available in Lot B starting at 6pm. The event is free and open to the public.
“Spotter training is perfect for anyone who is interested in the weather and in helping their community,” said Black.
Volunteer storm spotters report severe weather to the National Weather Service, which uses that information to issue warnings and alert communities about dangerous weather.
“Attendees are taught the basics of thunderstorm development, storm structure, the features to look for, and where to find them,” shares Black. “What, when, and how to report information, as well as basic severe weather safety, are also covered.”
Black’s field of study includes climatology and climate change, extreme events, atmospheric hazards and impacts, weather and transportation. He has been a featured in numerous media outlets including The New York Times and The Edwardsville Intelligencer.
