International Students Welcomed to Campus as the Global Community Continues to Grow at SIUE
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is welcoming approximately 350 international students from 30 different countries this fall. A kick-off event held on SIUE’s Quad Wednesday, Aug. 16, celebrated the new international students’ arrival.
“It is great to see continued interest in SIUE from students across the globe,” said James Monahan, EdD, director of graduate and international admissions. “We have a good mix of graduate and undergraduate students who have chosen to continue their education here, and they bring a real diversity of ideas and perspectives to the campus. I am excited to welcome such motivated and talented students to the university.”
“The International Student Welcome is a tradition,” said Baymuhammet Baltayev, sophomore political science and international studies major from Central Asia. “We welcome the international students to the great campus of SIUE. It is a wonderful day to be a Cougar.”
Students enjoyed music, karaoke, yard games and more during their first encounter at their new home away from home. In addition to the welcome party, the Office of International Affairs provided an orientation for the students, prepping and equipping them with everything they need to acclimate to life in the U.S.
“I am having a lot of fun,” said Rabiya Syeda, nursing student from India. “I was so excited to find so many events, and the people are very welcoming. I feel very good about choosing SIUE.”
The new students' arrival adds to the record number of international students that SIUE has welcomed in the past year.
