School of Business Awards Over $345,000 in Scholarships and Awards
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Business held their annual scholarships and awards event distributing over $345,000 in scholarships and awards to both undergraduate and graduate students within the school.
These scholarships and awards were distributed to more than 145 students to recognize and honor their exceptional work and commitment to their academic journey. The recipients of these awards are all currently pursuing careers in accounting, general business, computer management, information systems, economics, finance, management and marketing.
“We are proud to have had a four-fold increase in the dollar amount of the scholarships that we award over the past seven years,” stated Timothy Schoenecker, PhD, dean of the School of Business. “Donor-funded scholarships are an investment in the future of our business students and make a real difference in the lives of the recipients.”
There were many 2023 honors that were granted to various School of Business students. Some of these honors include the Homer L. & Helen L. Cox Scholarship, which awarded its largest funding total to date, as well as the new Dr. Bijoy & Mita Bordoloi Information Systems Scholarship.
The Homer L. & Helen L. Cox Scholarship is awarded to both incoming freshmen and transfer students within the School of Business who met certain academic criteria. In 2023, there were 28 Cox scholarship recipients that received a total of $112,000 in academic funding.
The Dr. Bijoy & Mita Bordoloi Information Systems Scholarship was established in order to help fund higher education for many graduate students in the SIUE School of Business over a long period of time. Dr. Bijoy & Mita Bordoloi contributed $1,000 to create this endowed scholarship for students in good academic standing who are pursuing master’s degrees in either management and information systems or business analytics.
When asked about making this contribution to aid in the academic funding of SIUE School of Business graduate students, emeritus SIUE professor Dr. Bijoy Borlodoi responded thoughtfully.vHe stated that the reasoning behind the donation is simply, “the joy of helping someone achieve her/his academic goals, especially those who have some personal challenges.
The inaugural recipient of this scholarship is Brandon Merz, a SIUE School of Business graduate student who is currently pursuing his MBA with a specialization in business analytics.
“It was an honor to be chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Dr. Bijoy and Mita Bordoloi Information Systems Scholarship,” Brandon Merz expressed, when asked about being awarded this scholarship. “I’m very grateful for the financial support and recognition of my hard work as I continue to pursue my MBA with a specialization in business analytics.”
