SIUE's Dr. Eugene Redmond Examines Race and Route 66 on Fox2Now
Posted June 30, 2026
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Professor Emeritus Dr. Eugene Redmond is featured in a Fox2Now Destination USA segment examining the untold history of Route 66 for Black travelers during the era of segregation.
Reporter Patrick Clark spoke with Dr. Redmond about how the iconic highway, while symbolizing freedom for many, posed real dangers for African American travelers. The segment explores how sundown towns and widespread discrimination shaped the Black travel experience, and how resources like the “Negro Motorist Green Book” helped families navigate an uncertain road. The story also highlights Alberta Ellis, a Springfield entrepreneur who built a welcoming space for Black travelers along the route.
The piece comes as Route 66 marks its centennial..
