Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s partnership with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and regional education leaders is helping position Southwestern Illinois and the St. Louis metro area as an emerging hub for geospatial workforce development, according to coverage from the Illinois Business Journal.
The publication reports that SIUE and NGA formalized a new education agreement on April 21 aimed at aligning university coursework with evolving industry and workforce needs. The agreement will provide students and faculty with expanded access to NGA scientists, facilities and career pathways connected to the geospatial sector.
During the campus event, NGA West Executive Bill Caniano noted that NGA employs more SIUE graduates than any other university in the region and described the University’s geospatial programs as a strong foundation for future workforce growth.
The article also highlights a related Education Partnership Agreement between NGA and the Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois designed to strengthen STEM pathways and connect K-12 schools, colleges and universities with geospatial learning opportunities across the region.
According to IBJ, regional leaders view the partnerships as part of a coordinated strategy to expand the long-term talent pipeline supporting geospatial science, intelligence, data analytics, and national security initiatives.
