About Student Government

Student Government represents undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Its primary function is to serve as an advocate on student issues and voice students’ concerns about campus issues.

Student Government holds two senate meetings each month that students may attend and address the senate at the end of the meeting during open forum.

The Constitution  and Bylaws  serve as the primary governing documents for Student Government and its committees.

Student Government Structure

Student Government is overseen by the Kimmel Student Involvement Center and the Office of Student Affairs and is divided into two main branches:

  • The legislative branch comprised of 22 senators:
    • 2 appointed Freshman Senators
    • 2 elected Graduate Senators
    • 3 elected Senators at Large
    • 3 elected Senators for the Colleges of Arts and Sciences
    • 2 elected Senators for the School of Business
    • 2 elected Senators for the School of Dental Medicine
    • 2 elected Senators for the School of Education
    • 2 elected Senators for the School of Engineering
    • 2 elected Senators for the School of Nursing
    • 2 elected Senators for the School of Pharmacy
  • The executive branch consists of three elected positions and eight appointed positions
    • Student Body President (elected)
    • Vice President (elected)
    • Student Trustee (elected)
    • Financial Officer (appointed by the President after elections)
    • Organization Relations Officer (appointed by the President after elections)
    • Internal Affairs Officer (appointed by the President after elections)
    • External Affairs Officer (appointed by the President after elections)
    • Marketing & Communications Officer (appointed by the President after elections)
    • Student Diversity Officer (appointed by the President after elections)
    • Election Commissioner (appointed by the President after elections)
    • Fee Review Commissioner (appointed by the President after elections)

The appointed positions are approved by the Senate. These officers, in addition to elected members of the executive branch, make up the Executive Board.

Vickie Sumner, Fiscal Technician for Student Government & the Kimmel Student Involvement Center

Vision for Student Government: to help SG help SIUE students achieve their goals and get their degree

Hobbies: Playing pan with SIUE Steel, spending time with family, working at WGEL and  gardening

Other involvements:  Member of the AFSME Local 2887, mentoring students and staff

Robin Ermer, Office Support Specialist for Student Government 

Hometown: Rockford, IA

Number of Years at SIUE: 1 year

Vision for Student Government:To help raise awareness about Student Government and what it can do for the students of SIUE.

Hobbies: Reading, scrapbooking, walking my dog, watching TV & movies, Spending time with Family and Friends

Other involvements: Professional Clown "Ardy" (ballooning is my speciality), Student Ministry Coordinator for Highland Hope UMC, Founder and President of Highland Art Parents Association

Vision for Student Government: To help the students be good stewards of student fee dollars and to be a voice for students and their issues and concerns on campus.

Hobbies: Spending time with my husband and daughter (Harper Jo), cooking and baking, reading and binge watching new shows.

Vision for Student Government: To be a community of student leaders representing their peers and guiding SIUE to excellence through determination, imagination, and care for others.

Hobbies: Playing board games, listening to music, attempting to be crafty, reading

Other Involvements: She oversees Leadership Programs through the Kimmel Student Involvement Center.  This includes the LEAD program, the Student Leadership Council, Emerging Leaders, Legacy, the LeaderShape Institute at SIUE, the Kimmel Leadership Awards Ceremony, and more.  In addition o my formal role, I also advise he Games Club.

Vision for Student Government: Student led discovery, empowerment and engagement

Hobbies: Weight Lifting and Traveling

Other Involvements: Women's & Children's Issues, Voter Involvement, Criminal Justice Issues (related to Victim's Rights), Victim Advocacy in large systems, volunteer and service coordination.
