Updates
Effective July 1st, SIUE has discontinued licensing Blackboard Collaborate and adopted Zoom as the primary lecture capture and synchronous communication tool for teaching and learning activities. Zoom, which was piloted by SIUE faculty in Spring 2015, is available now.
Highlighted Zoom Features and Resources
1. Faculty control the creation, storing, and sharing of recorded video files. One advantage of Zoom is that users have ultimate control over their recorded files. File conversions don't happen behind the scenes on a distant server; all locally recorded files are stored on your machine and can be uploaded later to your preferred storage service, such as OneDrive.
2. Anyone can use Zoom. Invite participants from the University and beyond - anyone can attend a Zoom session. Although you don't need a Zoom account to join a session, anyone at SIUE can log into Zoom using their SIUE email address and password. SIUE faculty who require more than 40 minutes of recording/meeting time or have a large, synchronous meeting planned can request an increase here.
3. Zoom lets you share screens, record meetings, and record quick web cam videos. Faculty may want to use Zoom for recording lectures, demonstrations, or creating other materials to add to their online teaching presence. Watch this tutorial on how to upload a recorded Zoom Session (MP4) to OneDrive and share the link with students: https://youtu.be/sctPoTD3cDU
4. Screen annotating and highlighting are built-in features. No need to edit in video annotations. Zoom lets users draw, highlight, and point to on-screen items, including PowerPoint presentations, Excel files, browsers windows, and any other file type you can run on your machine. Read more about using Zoom's on-screen annotation tools here.
5. Faculty can schedule live video meetings and invite participants from anywhere. From weekly online office hours, to one-time study sessions and student presentations, faculty can use Zoom to scheduling a variety of live/synchronous meetings with students. Watch this video on creating an office hours meeting link or check out this resource page on scheduling meetings.
6. Participants can use video, audio, chat features. When you join a Zoom meeting as a participant, you can do more than video conference; you can communicate though text chat, hand raising, and, if the host allows it, you can even remotely control the host's screen or share your own. Hosts can mute microphones, control participant video, respond to hand-raising, chats, and more. Find out more about attendee controls here and host controls here.
