Global Impact

If you’re passionate about helping others or you want to experience new cultures, check out SIUE.

A glimpse into SIUE study abroad reveals the challenges and rewards of service learning and cross-cultural experience. Our students exhibit kindness, courage and determination as they work together in an unfamiliar setting. The gratitude and appreciation they receive from people in Costa Rica will last long after the trip ends.

Nursing students provided free clinics for children and adults living and working near coffee fields with limited access to healthcare. They helped paint at an orphanage and gave away more than 300 pairs of shoes and backpacks at a local school.

Pharmacy students studied medicinal plants and tropical diseases in rain forests along the west coast. They met with students and faculty at the University of Costa Rica where a new partnership agreement was signed to collaborate in research, teaching, student and faculty exchange, and clinical practice.

Public health students explored the east coast, including some locations accessible only by boat travel through rain forest canals. They participated in a community-led volunteer effort to preserve and protect sea turtle nesting areas on local beaches.

It’s no surprise our students leave their comfort zone to volunteer and study abroad. SIUE’s commitment to service learning and civic engagement earns national recognition.
