When am I required to submit a Kuali protocol to SIUE’s IRB?

A protocol should be submitted for any project involving research with human subjects. Human subject under federal regulations is defined as a living individual about whom an investigator conducting research obtains data through intervention or interaction with the individual or identifiable private information. Research means a systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.

There are several exclusions to this definition, however we have a protocol that covers projects that may meet one definition, and not the other. Even if you think your project fits into one of the regulatory exclusions to the above definitions,  you should still fill out an IRB protocol, answer these questions, and submit so our office can help make the determination on whether the project is human subject research.
