What is an IRB?

IRB stands for Institutional Review Board. IRB are established to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects in research conducted at institutions. SIUE has an IRB that reviews all research conducted at SIUE and by SIUE faculty and students. The role of the IRB is to ensure the protection of human participants in a research study. Any institution that receives federal funding to conduct research with human subjects is required to establish and maintain an IRB to review and approve human subject research studies. SIUE IRB maintains an active Federalwide Assurance through the Department of Health and Human Services.

IRBs are required to have at least 1 nonscientist and 1 non SIUE affiliated member. SIUE’s IRB complies with the federal requirements on membership.
