Electronic Thesis & Dissertation (ETD) System
Graduate and post-graduate students must use ETD system, ProQuest, to submit theses, dissertations, or doctoral research projects (hereafter referred to as manuscript/s) to the Graduate School for approval. ProQuest ETD publishes and archives your thesis to make it a part of the research community.
The first step in successfully submitting your manuscript is to confirm individual departmental requirements. You can ensure the fastest possible manuscript review by starting the process during the drafting phase.
Ensure that you also format any manuscript following the Graduate School’s latest thesis guidelines before submitting it for final review and approval.
Discuss the Embargo Process with your Advisory Committee and Chair - During your thesis submission, you will be asked in ProQuest whether or not you would like to embargo your thesis. An embargo effectively withholds your thesis or dissertation from being placed on SIUE’s open-access dissertation archive (from which anyone can view/download your thesis or dissertation). Embargos may be appropriate for authors for the following reasons:
- They are seeking patents.
- They want to publish their work through a traditional press that considers open access publication to be equivalent to prior publication.
- They have published material from their work with a publisher that does not allow open access release for a certain period of time.
- They need to protect sensitive data or information.
Talk to your director about your decision and be sure to discuss the embargo process with your advisory committee and chair. If you need to embargo your thesis for longer than 2 years, contact the Graduate School.
Consider Your Copyright Options - Discuss the appropriateness of copyrighting your thesis with your committee. For more information on copyright, check out the ProQuest copyright guidelines.
The Graduate School provides resources and information, including workshops, to aid you throughout the overall process. ProQuest also provides tutorial videos about how to use their ETD system.
