Federal Statistical Agencies Unveil Standard Application Process for Accessing Restricted Federal Data

The standard application process (SAP), a new way to apply for access to confidential microdata, was recently launched. Applicants can now use the SAP to apply for access to data from multiple federal agencies for the same project and can track applications as they move through the review process. To get started, select a dataset and click the "Request Access" button. Full instructions are available in the Applicant Instruction Manual.
The SAP marks an important milestone for the federal statistical system. For the first time, primary statistical agencies and units have coordinated and agreed to use the same application for access to their restricted-use data assets. NCSES is proud to be part of this groundbreaking accomplishment. Information about each agency’s collection of confidential data assets can be found at www.researchdatagov.org.
The SAP was developed in response to the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act of 2018, to make data more easily accessible to the appropriate institutions, government entities, and individuals. Applications are limited to projects with an evidence-building purpose.
Users with questions about existing NCSES applications or arrangements for use of restricted-use data should contact NCSES directly at NCSES_Licensing@nsf.gov.
More information about the transition to the SAP can be found on NCSES's informational SAP website and Frequently Asked Questions page. Questions or comments can be sent to singleportal@nsf.gov.
