Discipline(s): Agricultural Sciences and Engineering
Project Description/Abstract: Chevron Phillips Chemical Company has a blending machine used to homogenize and mix small particles of plastic with various additives. The device is effectively 2 hollow, truncated-cones, welded to a short cylinder section in the middle. It rotates about the cylinder section to mix the particles. Sponsor is hopeful someone has access to modeling software for solids flow simulation. A discrete element modeling package or a similar tool where you can tell us if we can improve the efficiency and quality/homogeneity of our mixing. Either by changing speed, mixing time, or another variable. Also, effects of particle size distribution are of interest. Typically these are around 400 µm ± 200 µm. However, it varies outside of that range.
Total project budget: $50,000
Deadline: December 30, 2022.
