About the Program
The NEH Summer Stipend offers faculty members $6,000 to conduct research and produce material for publication. Awardees work full-time on their projects for two consecutive months. Stipend holders may visit archives or libraries and may hold other research grants supporting the same project during this time.
Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to scholars and general audiences in the humanities. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archeological site reports, translations, editions and other scholarly resources. Stipends support projects at any stage of development.
Summer Stipends are awarded to individual scholars; organizations are not eligible to apply. Indirect costs are not allowed.
The NEH welcomes projects that respond to the “A More Perfect Union”: NEH Special Initiative Advancing Civic Education and Commemorating the Nation’s 250th Anniversary As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, NEH encourages projects that promote a deeper understanding of American history and culture and that advance civic education and knowledge of our core principles of government. The agency-wide “A More Perfect Union” initiative will help Americans better understand the world’s oldest constitutional democracy and how our founding ideals are met in a modern, pluralistic society. NEH welcomes consideration of diverse topics in American history, from Native American culture to rural life to the rise of the industrial city, from the Civil War to the Cold War to the Civil Rights movement, etc. We also seek projects that examine foundational documents in U.S. history, as well as projects that examine historical objects, places, traditions, events, and individuals who collectively shaped our states and nation. Applications about the contributions of under-represented communities are highly encouraged or to other Special Initiatives of the NEH. (SIUE applicants are encouraged to visit the website to read about the initiatives and to consider how a proposal might be tailored to the goals of the initiatives.)
Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the NEH application guidelines at http://www.neh.gov/grants/research/summer-stipends. Sample proposals are also available on the NEH Summer Stipend website.
As a taxpayer-supported federal agency, the NEH endeavors to make products of its awards available to the broadest possible audience. The goal is for scholars, educators, students, and the American public to have access to a wide range of NEH-funded products. Such projects might include digital resources, websites, public lectures and programming, etc. For projects that lead to the development of websites, all other considerations being equal, NEH gives preference to those that provide free access to the public.
The NEH deadline for submission is September 22st, 2022 for the summer of 2023. As a limited program, however, the Summer Stipend program allows each institution to submit only two (2) proposals.
