Compliance Highlight - Export Control Classification Now Part of Drone Registration
Posted January 5, 2022
Disciplines: All
While the operation and registration of drones is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration, the export or transfer of a drone and its data to foreign countries or foreign nationals is governed by export control regulations under the Department of State and Department of Commerce. As these departments work independently of each other and have different missions, receiving drone registration approval from the FAA, does not mean any potential export control concerns have also been addressed.
As part of the drone registration application process, Export Controls will now also determine the export control classification of the equipment being registered and if any export control measures are needed. No additional forms have been added to the drone registration process. However, several questions pertaining to export controls have been added to the existing drone registration application. The drone registrant will be contacted by the Export Controls staff should a classification warrant further action.
