With the New Year and new semester approaching, ORP Compliance wanted to send out some helpful tips to keep in mind while working on a Kuali IRB Human Subjects Research Protocol:
- All Investigators on a project need appropriate CITI training. This includes all external investigators. Please note: Faculty advisors are considered investigators on student protocols if the protocol falls under expedited review. CITI training instructions and the names of the accepted human subjects research training courses can be found on our Compliance training website.
- If you need to renew or amend your previously approved protocol -- you can do that in Kuali. In your Kuali protocol, there are three options – Amend, Renew, or Renew & Amend. If you need to change anything about your project, including the end date, make sure you select If you need to renew before your protocol expires, but you also need to make slight changes, you should press Renew & Amend. The Renew option should only be selected if your protocol is set to expire and there is nothing else in the protocol that needs changing. (Hint, this should rarely be selected! Usually, the end date you previously listed will at least need to be amended.)
- Make sure to give yourself plenty of time for the IRB to review your project. Average times by review category can be found on our website here. The earlier you submit, the better!
- We offer an online tutorial of the Kuali system, as well as an IRB Guide Presentation to help walk through how to answer each question in the Kuali IRB protocol. Those videos can be found on our website.
- If you want to check to see what review category your project might fall under, you can take a look at the common rule definitions and requirements.
