Compliance Highlight: Update to the Kuali Human Subjects Research Protocol Form
Posted December 8, 2021
Disciplines: All
The human subjects research protocol form in Kuali has recently undergone an update to help researchers develop a more comprehensive protocol for IRB review. The changes involve more detailed definitions, explanations and examples within the protocol questions, as well as guidance on why the questions are important. Some of the updates include:
- More detailed explanation of who is considered a “human subject”
- Clarification on what is considered “normal educational practices”
- Question added to address research being conducted outside the United States
- More detailed explanation of when subjects are “identifiable”
- A “Permissions” tab at the top of each protocol now allows the person submitting the protocol to give co-investigators or faculty advisors permission to view or edit the protocol
While some of the new material is evident in the question itself, much of the additional guidance can be found in the help bubbles. To find this supplemental information, look for a question mark inside a bubble and simply hover your cursor over the icon to reveal the added text.
